Members mbrc Posted May 28, 2006 Members Posted May 28, 2006 We've got a band using acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro (resophonic guitar) and violin. We prefer to mic everything, but we sometimes play some really loud rooms, and need pickups. We want to hold onto the natural tone, so what are the best pickups for these instruments around the $100 to $200 range? Also, what are the best pre-amps for around that same price range (hopefully cheaper than the Fishman Aura). We want everything to sound as close to reality as possible. No Dave Matthews/ Tim Reynolds live tone. More like bluegrass. Thanks!
Members jackwr Posted May 28, 2006 Members Posted May 28, 2006 I stick to the mic no matter what. It is Bluegrass. They are acoustic instruments. If the room is too loud for my classic pro(avatar), I don't need to be there.

Frets99 Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Hey path, great site indeed. Minimally, I could compare a ton of guitars through a mic. Reinforcrd that I love Taylors and Bourgeios guitars. With caveats to the additional EQing any of them would need, I came away highly impressed with PUTW, Highlander and some Fishman. With those pickups, I almost always thought the Martin sounded better through a pickup than mic'd!! Yes all those guitars have dreamy complex tones and I would be willing to accept one gratefully, if anyone has an extra!

That site helped me to ultimately make the choice for the LR Baggs M1 for my new Masterbilt. I never entertained the thought of using a soundhole pickup for a natural sound until I listened to those sound files.

Just forgot to mention it.
