Members Jessz1 Posted May 21, 2006 Members Posted May 21, 2006 I said that I would never buy a guitar from guitar center but I picked up a d-35 that just sounded and felt so good..... I had to leave.... cash in hand.... didn't want to spend it.... I may have to take a closer look at martins now. I always thought they were overpriced. This one certainly wasn't. I gotta make a trip to Elderly to try some stuff out.
Members knockwood Posted May 21, 2006 Members Posted May 21, 2006 If you ever do decide to buy from GC, do NOT pay their asking price. I think they tend to price D-35s at $1999 in their stores - at least they do in NY. If you buy from them, get a quote from Elderly first and have GC match it or walk. If you're within travelling distance of Elderly, better yet to just go there. The D-35 is an awesome machine, IMO.
Members Harmonycat Posted May 21, 2006 Members Posted May 21, 2006 I know what that feels like. I just got a Washburn Timbercraft D-52SW. Amazing guitar! got it for a really great price on Ebay and was knocked out by the bass response of it, and build quality, for the money. Played it for a couple of hours and was all smiles. Down to the store I went to get afew different picks and couple of sets of strings. I needed to reinforce my feelings so into the acoustic room I went. Not one of the three Masterbilts I played was anywhere near as good. The Guild GAD-50 had a familiar feel and look but not the bass response. Several Gibsons I played just did not sound good at all....and I have played many Gibsons that were just magical. A Blueridge BR-1060 was nowhere near as good. I was pretty happy and played some Simon and Patricks and a Martin DM....thought my washburn was an absolute bargain. A nice Larrivee was quite a bit better, I figured since it was three times more expensive that it should be. I love Larrivees. My ears don't lie and so I was very happy until I made the mistake of picking up a D-35. Just ruined my mood! It was flat out fabulous, so rich, and complex. I don't know if they are all like that one, since it is the one and only D-35 I ever played. I have seen many but looked at the price and would not pick one up. Wish I hadn't....that one still goes through my mind. This Guitar just gave me indigestion...saying I got GAS doesn't cut it. This instument was orgasmic!!!
Members Jessz1 Posted May 21, 2006 Author Members Posted May 21, 2006 Yes 1999 was the price.... Yes elderly's is within driving distance. ALso another smallish store with a 35 in stock. Going to go see it next week sometime. I would like to get it for a bit less if possible. I was overwhellemed with the projection, volume and pure, rich tone. This thing was special.... I am going to check a couple others to make sure before I plop out the cash though. Just sold a car too.... extra cash fuels the gas....
Members Tony Burns Posted May 21, 2006 Members Posted May 21, 2006 Try to play at least a few of the model you like, they can vary in sound - but from my experience, when the right one grabs you , your a gonner ( its alot like love ) Elderly is probably the best place ive ever visited , a MECA for guitarists - well worth the drive from any where- and there prices are not bad ( on most of their stuff anyway ) Im more of a D-28 person than a D-35 person but differences in our likes ,makes the world go round - good hunting my friend !
Members BrainChild Posted May 22, 2006 Members Posted May 22, 2006 D-35's are great. The Guitar Center here is open to offers so feel free to insult them, all they can say is no. You may want to try and find a used one to save a few bucks. I saw a mint 2003 for $1200 in our local paper yesterday which is probably still available.
Members Jessz1 Posted May 22, 2006 Author Members Posted May 22, 2006 Elderly shot me a price a few hundred bucks less than guitar centers price. If GC still has it this friday, I may go down and lowball the shat outta them. If nothing else, make them match Elderlys price.
Members valleyguy Posted May 22, 2006 Members Posted May 22, 2006 Yes, those D-35s are magical sounding, it's at the top of my list with a strong competition coming from the HD-28. Damn GAS ! Enjoy it.
Members Gretsch Fan Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 OF all the things to be seduced by a D35 can't be bad. It will never leave you or cheat, lie, steal, etc. Not that it can do all the things your significant other can but it makes up for it in the long run... (No I am not bitter over my impending divorce. )
Members jackwr Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 Jessz1, Just think how good it would sound with fresh strings! Play a bunch of them, even in Martins, some stand out way above the rest. When I went looking I played at least 6 HD28's, and a couple of 35's. I wasn't impressed enough to plunk down that kinda money. I then picked up a D41 and opened my wallet a bit wider.....This one's got it! All the picker I respect that have played it fall in love with my baby. Then one day I walked into the same shop and found my latest mistress. 1992 00 19 Larrivee. This small bodied jewel just kicks ass! I even use it at Bluegrass festivals and can be heard above the rest. I guess my point is every guitar has it's own "personality". Some will surprise you (good or bad). Play as many you can before you plunk down the $$$. If you got a couple real close make them put new strings on them both.

I recently bought a Larrivee 00-05 on speculation and testimonials I'd read and, man, this thing has some punch for a "smaller" guitar. It's actually close in size to Larrivee's OM but, loud? I can't put it down. Problem with individual "personalities" of each guitar of the same type lies in choice. If there aren't many around to A/B then the idea of personality has to be shelved in making the decision and replaced with whatever guitar, in any make/style, that does the trick. Some of us just don't have the luxury/availability of choice and it becomes a (frustrating) notion that could snafu the purchase of a high end model. When I bought my D-35 (1974) it was one of two hanging on the wall and my brother bought the other one. I couldn't tell the difference between them sonically. But, their necks (greenwood)became unplayable within a couple months of each other due to questionable QA practices at Martin at that time, now no longer an issue. If I was to buy another dread the D-35 would be my first to try. Very nice sounding guitar.
Members Jessz1 Posted May 23, 2006 Author Members Posted May 23, 2006 I have played a few 35's recently and all of them were really nice. The one at guitar center so far feels the best and was as nice sounding as the others I played. Even with , as some have said, somewhat dead strings on it. I have been looking for a 41 to try and a 28 too. The 28's just haven't made me feel the way the 35's have though.
Members Ole Man Blues Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 Congrats on the D-35 purchase..... I purchased my 93 D-35 from GC and it IS a TONE machine. I played it against all they had in the acoustic room. The HD-28 was the only Guitar that gave it competition, but sonething about that seasoned tone of the 93 kept calling me back to her. Still happy today. No GAS here............ OMB
Members smokiee Posted May 24, 2006 Members Posted May 24, 2006 Remember in Wayne's World where he was seduced by a white strat? "she will be mine, oh yes she will be mine" standing by the shop glass window with both hands on the glass and staring drooling at the D-35... hehehh i'd like to see that happening.
Members Ole Man Blues Posted May 25, 2006 Members Posted May 25, 2006 Go grab that D-35 and don't look back. You'll love it the more you play it....... OMB
Members kwakatak Posted May 25, 2006 Members Posted May 25, 2006 Sounds like I have something else to try when I visit a local store that carries Martins and Taylors: Taylor GS rosewood/cedar: check Martin OM-21: check Martin D-35: and check Am I forgetting anything? My own guitar (Larrivee OM-03R) to A/B with? A list of miscellaneous inexpensive gear that I could use, like strings, cables, etc.? Credit card? My testicles that are in a jar under my wife's pillow?
Members Jessz1 Posted May 25, 2006 Author Members Posted May 25, 2006 My plan is to get everything I could ever want before I get married..... " I had this guitar before you, and I will have it after you" A larrivee OM is on my list also. I will have an acoustic guit for most every occasion. Then the last will be some sorta strat to go along with my Les Paul. I figure if I am going to go for it, I might as well go all out.
Members Jessz1 Posted May 29, 2006 Author Members Posted May 29, 2006 They sold the 35 that I had played and put a new one on the wall... it was nice but had a problem alot of guys complain about... boomy. I think I am going to have them put a new set of strings on it and try it again. If not, I will go to Elderly this week sometime. Wish me luck.
Members zb0430 Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 I'm looking for an HD-35 as well. Can't seem to find a local shop or guitar center around Atlanta that regularly has one in stock. Once you play one that grabs your ear, it's hard to get the thought off your mind, and I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket... ;-)
