Ian
Members Rada Posted May 29, 2006 Members Posted May 29, 2006 Ummmm.... 800 for a beater is kind of silly IMO You can get a great guitar for well under 500 if you look into Godin Art & Lutherie dreads are the perfect beater guitars IMO...

Members JasmineTea Posted May 29, 2006 Members Posted May 29, 2006 Martin DX-1 Just over $400. Spruce top, HPL b&s, has a good sound and doubles as a canoe paddle.
Members smokiee Posted May 29, 2006 Members Posted May 29, 2006 save some money, buy one of those china laminates, bring it home, lower the action, change the strings and you've got yourself a decent sounding beater which you dont have to worry bout scratches, dings and you can have your buddies autograph on it hehehehh... and you can beat someone with it those seagull s6 is excellent for a beater if you can get em used or Norman B18 or those lower end washburns...

Members babablowfish Posted May 29, 2006 Members Posted May 29, 2006 Buy a used Yamaha and then take the $500.00 you have left from your budget and have some fun. If you are going camping, to the beach, etc., you really don't want a guitar made with solid wood. The old Yamahas were built like tanks, and you can get them reasonably cheap on eBay or your local PennySaver. I use an old Yamaha laminate that was beat to {censored} and had no label when I bought it as my "beater." I have taken it to the beach (whici is where I am headed in a couple of hours) for the past several years, where it has stood in the sun, rode in the trunk, had sand blown into it, been dropped, etc, and it still has great action and sounds great.

Members tamolina Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 Casual playing at the beach or campfire...it is not like you are recording in a studio environment. How much tonal nuance or whatever is needed? The more beer is flowing, the better you will sound anyway. I think a $150 guitar would serve just fine for the purpose. Of course, you don't want something that is going to fall apart or won't stay in tune. I would go for a cheap Yamaha; like someone said, they are built like tanks. And they really don't sound bad at all, for what they are.
Members theGOOCH Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 I have thought about the Martin Dx1, but one thing bothers me about it. Maybe I'm weird, but I think it would be hard to get used to having no fret markers. They really aren't just for looks, I find them very functional for barre chords or when I need to jump down the neck for solos, etc.
Members babablowfish Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 Yeah! What the hell is going on with the spate of guitars being made with no fret markers? What are they thinking? I perform at an open-mike night every weekend and I have a tough enough time seeing the fret markers with the crazy lighting they have in that place. I can't imagine how I would find the right frets without markers on the fretboard.
Members Jessz1 Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 Alvarez makes a great cheapish jumbo... ad60 perhaps??? Can't remember.
Members egtact Posted May 30, 2006 Members Posted May 30, 2006 Washburn J28SECDL Cumberland. Jumbo fun at parlor prices!

Members egtact Posted May 31, 2006 Members Posted May 31, 2006 Yeah, but Washburns sound better and last longer and with the $ you save you can buy a nice case of bubbly for the camping trip!
Members hrhodes3 Posted May 31, 2006 Members Posted May 31, 2006 dx1s are loud as {censored} and bullut proof I agree
