Members axegrinder77 Posted October 31, 2005 Members Posted October 31, 2005 i'm considering putting a b band pickup in my acoustic. do i need to buy an amp specially designed for acoustic or can i use my fender pro junior tube amp. i know it's possible, but will it sound like {censored}? thanks
Members tlniec Posted October 31, 2005 Members Posted October 31, 2005 I've heard folks recommend against using 'electric guitar' amps for acoustic-electrics... but I think your Pro Junior would do just fine with a little EQ tweaking. Heck, my father-in-law plays an Ovation through a Crate Limo (battery-powered 60W SS amp) and he sounds just fine! Can't hurt to give it a try.
Members Dave W. Posted October 31, 2005 Members Posted October 31, 2005 I am pretty sure the Crate Limo was designed for acoustic. An amp tech friend told me that electric guitar amps have built in distortion and roll-offs at certain frequencys. I plugged my Martin A/E into my old Fender Champ and it sounded pretty muddy. I don't have a good EQ except what Fishman builds in to the pre-amp, so I don't know how much you can filter out. If you are going to spend some serious bucks on a B Band or something like that, it would be good to figure on getting a decent acoustic amp down the road. If you like the sound with your current amp you can always put the money in your pocket. It would suck to spend your last $$ on a pickup/mic system, then hate the sound because you don't have a proper amp. Dave
Members Kap'n Posted October 31, 2005 Members Posted October 31, 2005 Virtually all electric guitar amps are intentionally designed for low fidelity, with low and high end rolloffs, midrange dip, etc. And that's before you get into distortion. Most folks like their acoustics amplied with the highest fidelity possible. However, you aren't gonna damage anything, unless do do some SEVERE feedback stuff, and you might get a cool, grungy sound.
Members tlniec Posted October 31, 2005 Members Posted October 31, 2005 Hmmmm. I think the Crate amp can be tweaked for use as a monitor... perhaps it's got a flatter response curve than straight up guitar amps.

Electric guitar amps, as others have already noted, are not full range devices. They emphasize the mid range and roll off the highs and lows. Acoustic guitar amps, on the other hand, are designed more like PA's (and many acoustic players, my self included, believe that PA's are the best way to amplify an acoustic) providing a balanced amplification of the full range of frequencies.
Members solarmanjamz Posted June 1, 2006 Members Posted June 1, 2006 I would vote for the Crate Limo as well. It's a 2 channel amp designed for vocals/guitar/keys 10' woofer 2" piezo has line level rca in's fx etc. (in other words it a very nice full spectrum amp) battery powered too and it kicks butt. I have a classical acoustic electric that I play through it and it sounds beautiful. (not to mention a strat that sounds LARGE through it too).
