What would be a realistic offer to GC?

I've been reading alot in the electric forum about haggling with Guitar Center, and I'm ready to buy my new acoustic. I went the other night and played just about all in my price range, and I really loved the Takamine EG523sc. I was just wondering, what would be a reasonable offer to make on this? I'm really kinda what people would call a "nice guy", so i kinda have trouble talking people down haha. Well anyway, its $599.99, not sure if it come with case. But... I believe music123 has it for $601, with a case, with free shipping and no tax. Should I throw that out, $600 "out the door" for the guitar and case? Would saying "I really cant spend much more than $500..." work, for maybe getting it with case around $550? any help/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just tell them you are looking to spend $550 or $575 with case out the door and ask if can they do that. They might. If they counter with $600 w/case plus tax offer $600 w/case out the door and walk if they won't do it.

At a minimum, ask them to match the Music123 price with case, since they forever harp on their price match guarantee.

Personally, I hate GC, but that's just me. :)

I know how you feel; I'm the same way. Regardless, I got a Taylor 110 today for $500 out-the-door with two packs of Elixers. I think the guitar was tagged at $489. So I save about $15 on tax and got $30 worth of strings for free. That's a pretty weak attempt at haggling, I guess. I probably could have haggled a bit more, but I felt that I was already getting a pretty good deal considering that MF and the like sell it for $600. The store that I bought it from are all nice guys and is a very respected store. Going by what folks say about Guitar Center (I've never been to one), I wouldn't have felt bad about being ruthless in my haggling.

Anyway, I was originally going to trade in a Seagull M6, but didn't get a good enough offer. Although, the salesguy that was working with me twisted the owners arm (not literally I assume) into getting me a better price on it. Still, I ended up selling it for $65 more online. With that in mind, I asked the salesdude today if the price had any "wiggle room" considering that I was buying it straight-up rather than trade in. He said sure, and I asked for $500 out the door and a pack of Elixers. He said that he could probably do it and called the owner. I could almost hear the owner laughing on the other side at my weak attempt at haggling. Anyway, he also told me to get another pack of strings as a spare. Good deal overall, I reckon.

I always offer them 50% off list and work from there. They usually will meat ya somewhere in the 30 - 40 % off range.

If I found a smoken deal online that is less than that... Print it out and show it to them.:thu:

Haggle your arse off... They'd much rather sell a guitar, than have you leave. In the same breath, there are certain guitars that have a higher mark-up, and certain guitars that are specifically made for GC (these cannot be haggled). There is a Takamine EG 544 (Solid Cedar top, laminate koa sides and back) and they wouldn't budge from the $499 price-tag. However, I just went in and got a Martin that he was asking $1299 for, plus tax, and I walked out the door with it (a Martin 000C-16RGTE), a $30 strap, deluxe Martin case, and a set of strings for $1109 w/ tax. So, they're willing to negotiate, that's for sure. The thing is supposedley that if the price is blinking on their screen, it means that it's un-negotiable, but apparently if the price is not blinking then there's room to move.

First, if you've already worked with a salesman there and talked price, go to another guy and ask him what the best deal he can do out the door is. Let him say the price first. He'll come at you with, let's just say, $600, w/ case, plus tax. And, then you low-ball him and say that you'd do it if it were $500 w/ case, including tax. He'll tell you that there's no way that he can do that, and then you say, "Well, what can you do?"... That's where it'll start to get interesting. If I were you, I think you can get him down to $550 out the door with a case and some extra goodies. Definitely do not go over $600 out the door with a case. If it doesn't work, then ask the guy when he works next, and go a day that he's not there and find someone else who might be willing.

Whew... That was a much longer post than I had anticipated. Anyway, good luck, and you'll have to let us know how it turned out.
