Members martingibson70 Posted June 7, 2006 Members Posted June 7, 2006 The idea of an electric guitar with a separate output for a piezo has interested my for some time. I imagine playing the piezo thru my acoustic amp and the other pup's through my brand new/old 1968 Super Reverb , would be fun, especially with a volume pedal in between to control the blend. Anyone do this? I was thinking the Godin Solidac would be good for this. Opinions?
Members ESL94 Posted June 7, 2006 Members Posted June 7, 2006 They are really cool. I have played w/a couple of different guitars w/piezo's. I'm planning to buy this one @ the end of the year: Ibanez RG-1820x GK Guitar Features: Body: Basswood Body Neck: Five Piece Laminated Wizard Neck "Prestige" Neck Shape 24 Jumbo Frets Bridge: Ibanez Double-Edge Pro Vibrato Bridge Pickups/Electronics: Ibanez V-7 Humbucking Pickup in Neck Position Ibanez V-8 Humbucking Pickup in Bridge Position Five Position Pickup Selctor with Coil Tapping Peizo Electric Pickups in Bridge Active Two Band E.Q. For Piezo Electrics *I will change out the V-7 & V-8 pickups w/Bartonlini Pickups PBF-77D in the Bridge Position PBF-55 in the Neck Position:thu: One day a group of friends & I desided to put together our amps in different types of combinations w/the use of the Piezo & see what sounded good. Guitars used that day: w/two different Ibanez's, Godin, Parker Fly, Brain Moore. VHT - Pitbull (Electric side) & Dr.Z MAZ Sr. 38 Watt 1x12 Combo (Piezo side) Rivera - M60 (Electric) & Rivera - Clubster 45 (Piezo) Bogner Shiva Head with Reverb EL-34s (Electric) & Rivera - Sedona Top 55W (Piezo - this amp is sound great w/this pick up!) Fender Twin (Electric) & Rivera Chubster 40 (piezo) These all sounded great using b/t the electric & piezo side. I think that you will get a good tone. You may have to use a EQ to help with finding that balance (depending on what type of music you play) - I used my old Digitech RP1 (ran it in the loop) helped w/Jazz & Blues tone. Try it out on different amps, or if the store lets you take your amps in, & take it for a spin.
Members Singin' Dave Posted June 7, 2006 Members Posted June 7, 2006 I have three electrics w/ piezo bridges and they are extrememly handy in my cover band for playing all sorts of different voicings. It's pretty amusing to see people in the audience wondering where the acoustic guitar sound is coming from. While not quite up to a real acoustic, the acoustic tones are pretty darn good when run directly to the PA via a DI or preamp (I highly recommend on outboard EQ and preamp for the piezo like a Baggs PADI) Of these three guitars (a Godin Solidac, A Parker Nitefly and a Squier tele w/ an after market Graphtech Ghost piezo bridge installed), the Parker is my favorite (best acoustic tone of the bunch, awesome action and great sound), but the Solidac is a great guitar as well. If I was shopping again though, I'd probably just get the Parker for the addition $100 or so used I paid for it, but the Godin is my backup and again its a very well built guitar. I think if you do any switching from electric to acoustic on stage, a guitar with a piezo bridge would sure be a nice thing to have in your arsenal. YMMV
Members Highway_61 Posted June 7, 2006 Members Posted June 7, 2006 Peavey Generation EXP's have piezo bridges on a few of their models. I've purchased them for as low as 125.00 (because Peaveys get no respect). I enjoyed those guitars a great deal.
Members martingibson70 Posted June 7, 2006 Author Members Posted June 7, 2006 Good info and feedback. I was asking because there's a used Solidac that plays and sounds great in one of my local shops for $300. New ones retail for $750 ish/ street $600- 650. My fav shops don't carry Parkers (I try to but EVERYTHING from my small locally owned/independent shops), but I appreciate the suggestion. The acoustic forum is the best forum with the most well- rounded players. I have asked questions in here about electrics, tube amps for electrics, effect pedals, electric pickups, and have gotten great advice and info. Conversely, I posted an amp question in another forum 12 hours ago. It is buried on page 10 now.

If anyone had bothered to answer, the reply would have been in the order of what boutique amplifier you will have to get to attain proper tone nirvana... else, just suffer! Smart folks here and Electric guitars as well! Always worth the visit!
