Frets99 Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Finally got a chance to hear my Wechter in a live situation. I was blown away. At times I stopped singing (which is usually a good thing, anyway) just to listen to the guitar. Got lots of compliments on it. Straight into the PA. Also had my Planet waves SOS tuner. Worked fabulously. Quick quiet tuning and showtime!
Members kwakatak Posted June 16, 2006 Members Posted June 16, 2006 OT: there's an open mic at a local music store here tonight that I'm considering on going to. I don't know if I should bring my guitar though because I don't normally play and sing. Any advice?
Members dadgad7 Posted June 16, 2006 Members Posted June 16, 2006 I'll bet that was fun! Someday, I've gotta pull my balls outta my ass and get up the courage to do that! Frets - I need a good set-up person for my Takamine, I see in your signature that you're kinda endorsing Christian at Sweet&Sound. Can you tell me anything ' bout him, You've had good luck here?

I suggest you get up there and do what you do best. Play some instrumental or sing and play, open mic is a great place to put an act together. I would'nt trade the experience that it gives me for the world. I love em' Again, just do what you do and people will listen.

He's the best! Works out of Marlboro Ma. No job will phase him. A bit of a haul for you but if you're so inclined, you won't be sorry. Not often I can back someone unequivacally but he's done work for me and I've seen other guitars he's worked on!
Members dadgad7 Posted June 16, 2006 Members Posted June 16, 2006 I really appreciate the tip. I used to use Downtown Sounds in Northhampton, the guy had a great rep, I brought him my guitar for a fret job and set up cause the action was getting high. anyway, to make a long story short, he ruined my guitar, it took him 9weeks, and it cost me $450. the fret job was good but the action was worse than ever. and the bridge got taken off and put on out of line! he woudn't even listen when I exposed these problems, so I've been without a good tech for a bit.

I don't know if I should bring my guitar though because I don't normally play and sing. Any advice? I'm assuming you got anywhere from 3 to 6 songs you can do start to finish. See how you feel. Depending on the mic, you might get anywhere from 1-2 songs to 6-7. I'd be prepared to go the distance if I was feeling good. If you're really not feeling it, do your last song and thank the host. But go out and do it again. I have had different experiences at different mics. Even hosted one for a couple of years. Some nights it's like ok what happened? It just goes by so fast and you're just reacting. I've learned to savor the experience. If I can jaw with the other performers in between sets, that's always a gas. I usually say hi to the establishment. If I have a story about the song I'm about to sing, I'll share it. Sometimes I just start strumming and get into it. There are no rules. Do it the way you do it at home. Cept, where pants!

Yikes!! I bought an old Ovation Matrix for $75 with high action and who knows what all. I assume it was in it's case in somebody's attic for a number of years. He was honest about the possibilities. Checked for structural problems n cracks and such. When I went back to pick it up, I almost cried. It played and sounded sooooo good! He also removed the piezo system that was in there and replaced it with a fishman. Added a volume knob for me and in short, I love that guitar now!
Frets99 Posted June 16, 2006 Author Posted June 16, 2006 I bought the Wechter because of the sound system. I was and am happy with the Ovation but for $400, I got a terrific guitar unplugged and an awesome guitar plugged in. Combination: Piezo pup, magnetic pup and condensor mic. I can blend to my hearts content with no sharpness and I don't have to carry around an EQ Preamp as well. My Ovation with a little EQing from a preamp is wonderful but this Wechter is the brutha from anotha!
