Members Roll Them Bones Posted June 27, 2006 Members Posted June 27, 2006 Restringing my new/used Alvarez (my first 12 string) after a month, with extra lights instead of the med's that came on it. Other than the gauge of the strings and whether they are wound or not, there is no other features to determine the order. I'm thinking w027, w047, 018, w039, 012, w030, 008, w023, 014, 014, 010, 010. Am I close? Thanks,Mark
Members Freeman Keller Posted June 27, 2006 Members Posted June 27, 2006 Are you asking what gauge strings to put in the set? What order to put them on the guitar? Or whether to string "normal 12" or flip the octave ala Richenbacher? Unlike 6 string sets which are pretty standardized, one manufacturers 12 extra lights might be anothers lights. I grabbed this from the UMGF tension chart that I post a lot Martin 12-String 80/20 Bronze Extra Light Acoustic Strings D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings - 12-string Light 010/010 014/014 023/008 030/012 039/018 047/027 Elixers lights are the same except the octave G is 0.009 D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings - 12-string Extra Light 09/009 013/013 021/008 029/011 036/016 045/026 So, you are pretty close to what I put on my 12 string which is Elixer Nanoweb Lights, except for your little G. I tune down two half steps to D. I happen to like the phatter stings on the high and low positions since I tune those down even farther to the equivalent of open G or D. If you are asking the order to put them on - I replace all at once starting with the low E octave, but it might be easier to install the standard strings first (just from getting at the pins). If you are asking about the order of the courses - some people really like reversing the main and octave (as on a Rick) but it is a huge modification to your guitar - nut, saddle, and string slots. Don't recommend it.

Particularly the idea of putting on the regular strings first and tuning up, then adding the octaves and matching them. With some tuners it is much easier. If you are going to stay with the little G string you might want to buy a couple of extras. You WILL break them. Last thought - whatever you think of coated strings consider using them on your 12. I really like going 5 or 6 months between string changes and frankly I think there are so many overtones and things going on that a slightly duller string is not a bad thing. My strings of choice are JP's but right now there are a set of Nanos on the old beast.
