Members Hudman Posted June 27, 2006 Members Posted June 27, 2006 They are getting a lot of good press. They are designed by by Greg Rich (the guy that designed the Blueridge line). They make a solid spruce top with laminate sides and backs (Series I -- J-16 mahogany and J-17 rosewood) that sell for $299 - $339. They also make solid wood versions (Series 2 -- J-26 mahogany and J-27 rosewood) that sell for $449 - $599. Anyone play these guitars? You can find out more here: http://www.johnsongtr.com/Carolina-Series-I.1018.0.html You can buy them here: http://www.folkmusician.com/Johnson_Guitars.html
Members Godot Posted June 27, 2006 Members Posted June 27, 2006 Looks nice, but I'll never buy one. I'd prefer not to have my wife threatening to get rid of my Johnson if I don't put it away.

Members d03nut Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 Am very interested to find out more about these guitars myself. It seems that some of the "issues" that people had with their Blueridges have been corrected on these......
Members guit30 Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 I've heard they have beefier necks, but like when Blueridge first showed up, they are hard to find
Members MyM.O. Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 I haven't found one to play yet either, but it's being said they sound very good for the price, like Blueridge when they first came out and had more quality control. And I did try several Blueridges, one I liked a lot.
Members sawyer12 Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 These are outstanding guitars.Don,t let the johnson name discourage you. Greg Rich designed these guitars about a year ago. They have the prewar martin specs with the forward shifted bracing and the scalloped braces that gives them the sound of the martins.r I have a jd17 and it is an awesome sounding and great playing guitar. A lot of people prefer the jd16 which is mahogany. The tone is amazing all the way up the neck. I can assure you that they are better than a lot of guitars that cost several hundred dollars more. I,m not a salesman or anything like that so i,m not trying to sell one, lol. The jd26 and 27 are all solidwood where the 16 and 17s are solid englemann top with laminated back and sides. You can get them for less than the prices quoted above with a hardshell case. As mentioned above Greg Rich said Saga would not listen to complaints or request for changes from customers to make the blueridge a better guitar, he said saga said why change when they all sell anyway. So greg quit saga and works for the music link and designed a better guitar. Greg said the 000 models will be available mid july. Greg still posts sometimes on the unofficial blueridge guitar forum and you can get some information on the carolinas there also from greg.

I found a JD-17 for $339.00 with a case.

I'd be mighty interested in a 000. I'll have to keep a lookout for it.
Members sawyer12 Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 Hudman, I misread the price quotes you posted above on the jd16 and 17. 339.00 is a good price. However I have seen the all solidwoods for 434.00 and 559.00 Believe it or not my jd17 sounds the same as the jd27. If you find a better guitar for that price please let me know.

I am seriously considering buying a JD17. Thanks for the help.

Actually, it's a long story involving my central air unit crashing and the old faulty electrical wiring in my garage. Let's just say I am in a bit of a financial jam and my Larrivee is for sale on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&item=280001731981&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT I'm considering selling my Alvarez and some golf equipment (I lost interest in the game) to get me something in between the Alvarez and the Larrivee. I'm not sure. I'm really liking those Epiphone Masterbilts. The AJ-500R is talking to me. I can't find any used ones on Ebay. I found a used DR-500M on Ebay for $369. That's within my budget if I sell the Alvarez and my golf equipment. I would have roughly $425. I'm just not sure that I want a mahogany dread. I may just hang on to the Alvarez for now and wait. It sounds great with the medium strings.
Members kwakatak Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 Man, that sucks! Come to think of it, I've been noticing a faint electrical smell coming from my furnace....! ... but my wife will have to pry my Larrivee out of my cold dead hands!!!! * sneaks in wife's closet, pilfers everything and heads to the consignment shop *

It's going to cost me apprx. $1200 to replace it. My garage wiring is {censored}ed up. It was wired back in the '70's. I'm positive drugs were involved. I'm going to wire it myself, but it's still going to cost me a few hundred dollars. By the way. My auction is going good. It hit my reserve price within the first 3 hours of being listed. I have 23 people watching it and have had 266 hits. Not bad for 2 days.

I know how that goes, Hudman. Judging by the workmanship used in building my house back in '89 the developer hired a pack of rabid monkies. I'm currently putting off a bunch of home improvement endeavors myself, none of which are quite as urgent as yours.

My house was built in 1956 - back when they took their time to build a house right. It's a solid home. I made most of the upgrades to it over the years (windows, furnace, new cement, doors, refinished the hardwood floors and other assorted projects). I never keep guitars for too long. I'm going to miss the Larrivee, but I'm easy like Sunday morning. I will fall in love with another....
Members kwakatak Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 Still and all, it makes me sad. In fact, this has been a sad, sad day all around. I'm actually too bummed out to go to sleep now.

I'm actually too bummed out to go to sleep now. It sucks that a 2 year old Micarta thread resurfaced and made people lose their minds. I'm not sure, but it seems like someone lost money or a woman to a micarta salesman.... Don't let my situation bum you out. Originally, I didn't want to mention here because I was afraid it would make people feel bad for me. That's not my style. Besides, I'm a lucky guy. I have a beautiful wife, 2 great kids and a really good job. I figured I owed you an explanation for my Johnson Carolina curiousity.
Members kwakatak Posted June 28, 2006 Members Posted June 28, 2006 Yeah, well yu know me: I'm a packrat and everything I own has some sort of sentimental value. Hell, I even went and put strings back on my Tak because I felt guilty about keeping it in my basement, stripped. Now it's hanging on my wall in the corner right next to the OM-03R and the Strat is on a floor stand right below them. My wife's right: I may have too many guitars, either that or the room I keep them in is too small!

My wife's right: I may have too many guitars, either that or the room I keep them in is too small! My longest stretch was 8 years. For 8 years I owned 2 guitars: a Seagull S6 and a Peavey EVH Wolfgang Special. During that period of time I experienced zero GAS. I think it's because I was too busy. Four years were spent on my apprenticeship and college classes. During that time I bough my first house, got married and had kids. I didn't get GAS until my life slowed down a bit.....
