How do I lower the strings towards the neck?

I just bought a brandnew Fender Acoustic a few weeks ago. I always thought it was hard to press the strings down- but then I started telling myself that that

if it's brand new it should have been set up by the dealer that sold it to you. If you bought it locally, I would recommend that you take it back to them & have it set the way you like it. If you bought it long-distance (a la via the Internet) first thing is, I would thoroughly read Freeman Keller's thread (sticky) @ the top of the HC Acoustic page entitled IS MY GUITAR SICK? then decide whether you want to make some needed adjustments or take it to a local dealer for them to make on your behalf. I think you might expect to pay around $60 for a good professional setup these days.
be extra careful if you decide to start messing around with the truss rod.

I would add to the above. DONT mess with the truss rod unless you are absolutely sure you know what it does and what you are doing!
