hey guys. im moving away to college, and i was planning on getting a new acoustic guitar to bring with me. my current acoustic is beat to {censored}, and tends to break strings alot. anyways. i was wondering if you guys could reccomend me a guitar in the 500 dollar range, preferably new, but i will look on craigslist for used ones.

I think if I was shopping in that price range, I would check out the Seagulls. They're built good and have a pretty decent mellow tone that I like whether flat or fingerpicking. I know there are others out there with equally fine attributes but my experience lies with the Seagull. Also, they're North American made.

Have fun shopping. I love looking for a new guitar!

epiphone masterbilt's are pretty cool in that price range...

i'd probably strongly urge going used since its probably going to take some abuse going through dorm life... i know mine did, and i was glad i didn't have to baby it

I agree, Seagull's can do the job.

In college, I owned a Seagull S6, & S6+GT-OII (they had a great deap tone w/a nice finish).

You may also look @ the Seagull M series - Mohogany & Spruce woods.

As well as these brands: Washburn, Alvarez, & Gulid

Good luck

I wouldn't take a $500 guitar to college. As careful as you might be, that drunk roommate or friend WILL find a way to damage your investment.

For less than $200 used you should be able to snag a nice, solid top Yamaha, Washburn, or Alvarez that you wouldn't have to protect as much. Then you can use the leftover cash for beer and women ;)

Although Seagulls have a tremendous reputation, and if you can find one used for less than $250, that would be worth it.

You are getting some great advice.

I highly recommend buying a factory refurbushed Alvarez on Ebay. They have a factory refurbished MD90 (solid spruce top and solid indian rosewood sides and back) on Ebay for $429 (free shipping with Buy it Now). The seller has a 48 hour return policy. Musicians Friend sells it for $700.

Epiphone Masterbilts tend to run a bit over $500 on Ebay. I bought a factory 2nd Masterbilt DR-500RE Monday for $549. The seller claims he can't find a flaw on it. He has 2500+ transactions with a 100% rating (and a 10 day return policy). It's scheduled to be delivered Friday.

Hey guardaespalda,

your a college kid , put some work into your old one ( maybe new tuners -strings, smooth the rough edges so strings dont break ) and put your money in the bank - you need to buy a lot of pizzas to keep alive -- then use your guitar more , and dont worry about it , when you graduate - then buy your Elite instrument - or chase girls --- good luck !

I agree. Besides there is a good chance that a $500 guitar will get stolen or destroyed in a dorm setting.

thanks for all the advice guys. yea, i think i might end up getting a cheaper guitar than 500 dollars. I found a couple of seagull guitars on craigslist that are 275 dollars, so i will check them out.

Great idea. I owned a Seagull S6 for 8 years. It was a great guitar for the money.
