Members Queequeg Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 Harvey Leach this is the same guy who tricked out the D45 for just under $200K.
Members Kap'n Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 Yuck. Needless to say some Sox fan with a lack of taste as large as his wallet will purchase it.
Members dadgad7 Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 very very cool, I really like the idea on the fretboard inlays! always thought redwood was way-cool for tops! other than that, I could never relax with a diamond shaped soundhole! it suits it's purpose well enough, but just looks strange

Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 i've been a sox fan since middle of high school-ish... as a guitarist... i've no use for that thing... as a sox fan... i think its pretty cool... the fretboard inlays are really clever. It'll make a cool mantle piece for somebody
Members Kap'n Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 Originally posted by Queequeg hey, don't sugar-coat it, Kap'n. Tell us what you think! I think it falls under the same category as that "King of Kings" guitar that Gibson made a while back, or the Harley Davidson or Marilyn Monroe Strats. Hopelessly pandering to a group of people where at least some members have deep pockets, and taste is not a prerequisite to membership.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 hey, it only takes one... you don't usually need a group of people with no taste... just one...

Right, but then that's a custom ordered guitar. You can build one of these on spec, and you know somebody will buy it.

Members Kap'n Posted July 10, 2006 Members Posted July 10, 2006 Maybe you could make a series of them that kid whizzing on FordChevyDodge.....
Members Queequeg Posted July 10, 2006 Author Members Posted July 10, 2006 well, as I said, the Red Sox guitar would not be anything I would be interested in but Harvey Leach has been building really fine instruments for 30 years, one at a time. Clearly, that one is for a Sox fan not a serious guitarist. And while Kap'n has already stated today on another thread what value he places on inlay, Harvey is one of the very best and does it all by hand, not CNC. He is right up at the top of his field with Grit Laskin and Larry Robinson. Curiously, his 'signature guitar' is rather plain, and goes for something like 8 grand. (below)

I think that some inlay work can be absolutely beautiful as a work of art when tastefully done, Manzer's Pikasso, for example, but it's not anything I would play, even if I could afford it. A D-45 to me is like a rhinestone suit. The part that really goes over the top for me, is the inlay around the fingerboard.
