Members circuitspore Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 Hi guys. I normally hang out in the bass forum (I can feel the dirty looks from you guys), but I've got a question for ya. What model is this guitar? I know it's a WWII-era Gibby, b/c of the silkscreened banner in the middle of the headstock and the lack of a truss rod. (The neck is HUGE on this guitar, btw). This was my grandfather's guitar, who bought it off a fellow sailor while on serving on the USS New Jersey during the Korean war. He kept it until he passed in the late 90's. Ever since I started playing guitar around 1995 or so, I've attempted to identify it a few times, using reference books, but I never seemed to find a picture that matched this guitar. Any help would be appreciated.
Members DonK Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 An L-00 maybe? Hard to tell from the pic. Is that the original pickguard and/or has some of it been cut away. The pickguard doesn't look right for an L-0 or -L00. What's the script on the headstock; I see Gibson, but it looks like there's something else, too.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 just slightly educated guess... 1943 J-45
Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 the script on the headstock says "only a gibson is good enough"... they're called "banner" years/models...
Members circuitspore Posted July 2, 2006 Author Members Posted July 2, 2006 definately not a J-35/45/55 model. body is too small. that was my first guess as well.

Members Treborklow Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 It is a LG-2. This model was introduced in 1942 and during the war years some were made without truss rods. I can't tell you the exact date of yours without a serial number.

Did a google images search and that designation matches up. Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have a serial number because the guitar resides with my Aunt (who laid claim to the guitar after my grandfather's death. oddly, she's the only child that _doesn't_ play guitar). So, I only get to play it on special occasions like Christmas, etc when we're over at her place. The rest of the year it sits in its case, in the corner of the living room.
Members Treborklow Posted July 2, 2006 Members Posted July 2, 2006 It's probably a 1942 or 1943, if it has a Mahogany neck. After that they switched to a Maple neck. They probably started installing truss rods around then as well, so more than likely a '42 or '43.
Members kf6zql Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 I have the exact same guitar, just inherited it. the serial seems to be n or v?4034 25 any idea on age anyone?
