Members johnkline Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 I just got a gibson j-45 rosewood, so I'm paranoid about damaging it. Of course it didn't help reading in the booklet that hanging it on a wallhanger or a stand could damage the nitrocellulose finish. Anyone ever had any problems with leaving it on a stand/wall for prolonged periods. I have an ovation and a martin with no problems, but I'm really babying this one, I won't even take it out of the case until the little babies,4yrs and 2yrs:), are asleep. John
Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 if you're keeping it in the case most of the time, and its on the stand for an hour at a time or so, i can't imagine you having any problems... i think when you're talking long term you're talking weeks + at a time
Members Queequeg Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 I wrap my stands in Ace bandages, after having damaged the NC lacquer on my Eastman archtop. it stays in place and contours to the stand shape. and requires no tape or anything that will add additional risk or deposits on the guitars.
Members Old_Joe_Clark Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 my finish is dull where my arm rests and from (when I commited the cardinal sin of) resting my pinkey on the upper bout by the fretboard. I don't know how to fix it.
Members WaveRay Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 I have two Martins that have that finish on them and yes, They can be and WILL be marked by some stands. Do not use any of that surgical tubing as cushions on stands for that guitar. I have one of those Taylor custom stands that marked my Martin. I have a nice folding stand that has ridged rubber as a rest and I have that covered with a soft cloth. These finishes are touchy and need to be taken care of.
Members Queequeg Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 interesting that the mfgrs of guitar stands and their vendors are selling stuff that does damage to the very products they are designed to be used with. (...and never end a sentence with a preposition.)

Members meandi Posted July 17, 2006 Members Posted July 17, 2006 i've seen stands for sale in stores that had tags on them warning of a reaction with nitro finishes
Members Freeman Keller Posted July 17, 2006 Members Posted July 17, 2006 And, yes, one of my Dobros has the finish badly damaged from the surgical tubing on a stand (including the beautiful sunburst stain). It gives me a nice reference point for my thumb when it hits the rough spot on the back of the neck.

Taylor is not the only manufacturer of guitars or guitar stands, thank you very much.many stands are being sold with no warnings on them, yet, nevertheless will ruin the finish on the guitar. My question was, why would anybody make a stand that would damage a guitar?tell me again, what was your point?
Members Andrewrg Posted July 17, 2006 Members Posted July 17, 2006 I had the finish on a Martin J40 melt from reaction with a stand. The binding became soft on the rear bottom bout.

My apologies,I read your reply as though you were addressing my statement. I couldn't figure out why you were copping an attitude with what I said...turns out you weren't. My point was there are stands that won't bother most guitars but there are guitars that will be bothered by a lot of stands. The Martins I mentioned (Vintage toner) do not like the rubber on the Taylor stand nor do they like the surgical tubing or that cheap foamy stuff you sometimes see. I was guessing teh J-45 might be similar. Sorry again for the misunderstanding. Nothing meant.
Members SpaceCowboy409 Posted July 17, 2006 Members Posted July 17, 2006 Wrap the contact points in cotton (I cut up and old tee shirt) and you'll have no worries. It really sucked when the stand melted the finish on my Guild.
Members Queequeg Posted July 17, 2006 Members Posted July 17, 2006 WaveRay-no harm/no foul.I also went back and reread the thread & now I too, can see how you would have interpreted my post that way.thanks for clearing this up. sorry I wasn't more articulate in my post.I was thinking specifically of Musicians Friend, (but they have lots of company) who, until about 8 months ago when I called them on it and I wouldn't take no for an answer, sold those $19.95 (and put them on sale for $9.95) stands with no warning whatever on them, ostensibly to guitar players, ostensibly for holding guitars. and they will most certainly damage it. Now they still sell them, but it comes with a warning label like a pack of cigarettes. Now, if I was REALLY a 'Musicians Friend', I wouldn't do that. The information is available if you look hard enough, but guitars are seldom if ever tagged with the type of finish they are wearing.Maybe its just me, but the idea of selling a guitar stand that's not safe for guitars seems a bit counter-intuitive.
