Members Misha Posted July 23, 2006 Members Posted July 23, 2006 Is it common? Please educate me about it?
Members knockwood Posted July 23, 2006 Members Posted July 23, 2006 Very common. Mahogany offers a great balance of strength to weight and is very stable. It's the most popular neck material for quality steel string acoustics but is becoming increasingly scarce (so we hear). A common alternative is Spanish cedar - long used as neck material on classical guitars - which is slightly lighter and almost as strong. Martin used Spanish cedar as the neck material on its 16 series originally, but somewhere around a year ago changed the neck specs on most of its guitars to "Select Hardwood," reserving the right to use their own discretion in selecting neck wood. I understand through hearsay that Spanish cedar is also running short...
