choosing instrument to match personality

can any of you tell me how closely musicians match their instruments e.g. in a rock group the lead guitarist is the extrovert, the rhythm guitarist is the reliable sidekick, the bassist is the quiet shy one and the drummer is a psycho, but do they choose the instrument because of their personality or does the personality change under the influence of the instrument, am i talking through my h@le again?:freak:

This is a cool subject.

I've been involved in bands where the above was pretty close to the truth. In my current band, however, it isn't at all. Our bass player (a Brit, and the oldest member) is probably the wackiest of the bunch, our lead guitarist is pretty quiet, our rhythm guitarist is also the main lead singer, therefore he's probably the most extroverted of the lot, our drummer is a bit of a joker, it's true .. and I play mostly keyboards in this band, sing lead on a few songs and play any other instrument I can handle depending on the demands of the song. I guess I'm probably the closest thing we've got to an arranger ...

So ... I guess the answer to your question isn't straightforward. I'm sure others will have interesting replies ...

This is a great question. Yes, I think the instrument is an extension of personality. Much like the car a person drives - provided they bought the one they want - or the kind of pet they keep or clothes they wear, a particular instrument is their chosen means of self expression. I also think, depending on their passion, the more they have to say the better they become on their instruments of choice. That said, drummers must like to yell a lot.

I guess I haven't thought about it much, but I play guitar primarily because I love them - their sound, their looks, even their smell (well, some guitars).

On the other hand, my wife and daughter think I play guitars to annoy them.

When I come to think about it,
there might me some personality issue when it comes to choosing an instrument.

I haven't found THE ONE guitar that covers all music styles and situations I make music in.
And I tend to prefer one guitar for some time, than switch to an other, then come back to #xx, and so on, depending on the mood I am in.

Why choose a guitar?
Because a guitar can cover so many expressions from heavy rhythm to hardly touching the strings fingerstyle, harmonics fingering to pick ripping.
I have tried electric, played in a band. My electric playing was too bluesy for the band, I tended to listen to the notes instead of piling them up in speed.
So I got back to (sometimes amped) acoustic.

I sometimes play indian flute, or penny whistle, when the occasion rises. Just for the fun of it. Or plunk a piano when no-one's around. Mood thing again, AND a matter of availability.

Maybe that's why guitars are so in demand: they're easy to grab or put aside, don't eat meat, leave the cat alone but respond to the lightest touch.

And they DO need some care from time to time, just an intimate moment of cleaning, restringing (they're the only ones I know wearing 6 strings), retuning and hearing the familiar DADGAD tuning rolling out.

Aren't we lucky?

Have fun!
