I have been all over the place playing guitars, I played a Martin d35 the other day at GC and I was absolutely blown away by this guitar - AMAZING Sound.... $2100 is a little steep but Im willing to pay it, but I would muvch rather spend less.. I was looking online at the Martin d-16RGT, I cant seem to find it at any stores near me. Any opinions of this model? Should I just by one online and see if i like it??

I also played and liked the Gibson Songwriter deluxe, though it didnt have the volume of the d-35 or the bass - I didnt care for the d28 much- I actually played 3 differnt d28's and I wasnt happy with any - I played the d18 - But I wasnt crazy about this either... But it could be that it was that imparticular guitar.. I notice that most of the guitars at GC have dead strings on them and they dont seem to be taken care of very well....

Help me out here.... Need opinions...

I play mostly folk/rock, and modern rock, but I am also starting to get into finger picking again, I reaqlly want a great sounding guitar that will sound good with any style....

Thanks in advance...

If you're willing to spend that $2100 don't miss out trying a Santa Cruz or two. Actually try out everything you can. As to buying online I wouldn't buy an acoustic that way but others here have no hesitation in that regard.

No question about it, guitar shopping is stressful.

For me, when I used to buy shoes, I always wanted to try on a pair a size larger and a size smaller than what I thought I needed, for comparison. You can't do this with guitars, and so there is no absolute with decision making.

When I got my first steel string (Martin OMC-21) it was an incredible experience. It was tucked away near the floor in one of the corners of the high end room at Mandolin Brothers. I had scanned the wall full of guitars adjacent to it looking for something that appealed to me, than spied the OMC-21 near the floor. It practically glowed with a haloe before I even picked it up.

Maybe you will have a similar experience.

I'm a big fan of Martin D-35's. Marvelous sound and capable of sounding great whether you flatpick or do fingerstyle. I believe the lighter bracing of the 35 makes it more responsive to a lighter touch than the D18 or D28. In fact one of my favorite fingerstyle guitarists, Jack Williams, performs exclusively with a D-35. You might try looking around for a used one. I've seen quite a few available for prices mostly ranging from $1200 to $1800. Every one I've played has sounded terrific.

No 16 experience, but if you're willing to spend that kind of money and are really interested in a guitar that a shop has, do not feel bad about asking them to put new strings on it for you. In fact, I've seen a guy ask the tech at a GC to lower the action on an OM so he could play it. IF they know you're seriously considering the guitar, they'll do it, or they really don't want to sell it.

If you're looking at Martins, don't froget the V series and/or the HD series.

BTW.......stressful???? I found guitar shopping some of the best times of my life!

I can't wait to do it again.

One piece of advice I will give you: Don't pull the trigger too quickly. If you like a guitar, go back and give it a whirl another day. Go to a different store and play some more. I think buying an acoustic is a process that can't be rushed, and I've found that if I give it a few weeks, or even monhts, that the decision becomes easier as I am able to disqualify more and more guitars and it gets down to either one winner or a choice between two or three.

.....and as been stated so many time in so may posts here in this forum, if you give it enough time, the right one will find you. (It usually comes with a higher price tag than he original plan but is never regreted)

Have fun, take your time.

Its just stressful having to choose from sooooo many nice guitars.. This afternoon I played a d-15 - I was amazed at how good this sounded, I also played a taylor 514 - which i thought was pretty damn nice too...

As far as gibson goes I havent been too impressed, I do like the songwroter though...

I am going to keep looking - I think I may take a ride in to NYC this week and take a look at rudy's and manny's....
