As a relatively new player (soon to be much BETTER), I am overwhelmed by the number of web sites and CD's that try to teach you guitar. They all promise you can learn to play in 10 days, or some other similar line! Most seem to offer a free lesson or two, then you have to join, or they sell you CD's for big $$$.

Several promised you can pay $50 and get LIFETIME subscription to their site for free lessons online forever??

I realize these are not a short cut to an easy way to play, but wondered what members have found to be some of the better ones.

I do plan to take some private lessons, just trying to find ways to help cut costs while learning as much as I can. Thanks for relating your experiences and any recommendations.

I'm a member of Licklibrary.com and I like their DVD's. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone below an intermediate level though. For beginners there's Guitar Xpress. I discovered them because my digital cable provider allows subscribers to order them for free right off your TV. They also have a web site and videos for sale.

I think a GREAT learning DVD is Guitar Method in the Style of The Greatest Riffs of all Time. You get regular speed demos of the greatest riffs from the Beatles to Kansas to Aerosmith. You also get them demo'd slower and it includes a chapter of tabs. A lot of players hate this series for its lack of instruction for an entire song. But, if you know this and don't care, and just want to get your feet wet with many types of great riffs, this is the DVD.

Good luck.

I have been learning from scratch for eight weeks now and would recommend Jamorama if you are a visual learner. I bought the product as a download and it comes with free lifetime upgrades! They have already added a complete new upgrade this month which I got for free! Give their six week free course a try. It's very good. Also they have created a forum for members which is very helpful with course/guitar related stuff.

Have to say I was in the same predicament as you when I first started looking around. Though I am more of a computer guy....don't like watching DVD's!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I too just bought Jamorama about 3 weeks ago and love it. I can understand that it's not really for advanced players but as a beginner it's perfect. The jamtracks and videos absolutely help and he does a good job of putting the lessons in line so they make sense to me.

i have been fooling with the guitar off and on for many years and even tried 3 professional teachers but my work schedule and the monotony with which they taught made me drop out. On this I find it very interesting and I can work on it whenever I wish.

I would definitely recommend it to a beginner who wants to learn the basics without being bored. I love it and by next year I'll be a helluva guitar player. I'm sure of it.

This is what I found on the internet and its free. There are 11 lessons that will teach you from the ground up. I was greatful that I was able to find this and learn the basics for free. Here is an overview of what the lessons are:

Have you always wanted to play guitar, but never got around to actually getting started? Here is reason to begin... a free online guitar lesson, which is essentially the same lesson I teach all new students. You'll learn how to hold a guitar and pick, the names of parts of the guitar, a scale, a few chords, and a couple songs.
