Members Kalebmation Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 Hello all Picked up an AJ500R Masterbilt today. Plays like an absolute dream, and sounds marvelous. It even sounded great with the dead strings on it at Guitar Center. I strung it up with Martin SP 11-52's and am in love. This is one of the best guitars I have ever played. There are a couple finish blemishes like a kind of scratch thing on the back and a nick on the bottom of the guitar. They are shipping in a new one in the box from the North Carolina GC to compare this one to; whichever one I like the most is the one I'm taking. Great service from Todd and Jesse at the Columbus, OH Guitar Center. Now for the best part: Sorry for the crappy inside pics.
Members feintguitarist Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 Nice... Where are those things made? I seen one eBay auction that said China, and another that said Japan. That case has a humidifier in it right?
Members Kalebmation Posted July 18, 2006 Author Members Posted July 18, 2006 They are made in China, set up very well in the USA. The case includes a humidifier and the gauge.
Members unpluggedthumb Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 I just went to GC today to drool over those. I want an AJ 500R too. I like their looks a lot, and I love that bass punch they deliver, that is what I like in an acoustic. I'm realy tempted to throw it on my card -- {censored}ing GAS is deadly as hell! Yeah, I'm tempted to throw the AJ500R on the card, and then BUY an Art and Lutherie cedar top dread, which I also have a boner for, and go for the double shot of two cool guitars that wont land me in the poor house, while I feed my acoustic addiction. Nice {censored}ing guitar, enjoy.
Members gotboostvr Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 I played that EXCAT guitar a bit ago.it was pretty nice sounding and playing. was it still in some alt-tuning when you played it?I think it was tuned to open A when I played some slide on it in the store.
Members Hudman Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 Nice. I bought a Masterbilt DR-500R last week. Epiphone is putting out some excellent guitars for the money.
Members marekk Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 i got an epi EL-00 the other week from MF and they are all ready out of stock i have noticed. anyway, great build, sound and finish for the bucks. nice lap guitar, has a smooth sounding even tone. just needed someting to learn acoustic blues on. the neck is real nice, solid spruce top and laminate maghoney. the neck and bridge was set correctly and pretty easy to get a lower action setup after tweaking the truss rod a little.
Members EvilTwin Posted July 19, 2006 Members Posted July 19, 2006 Congrats on the purchase. How's the neck feel on that one? I got to try an Eip Masterbuilt, and I really liked the sound, but the nut width was VERY narrow compared to what I'm used to.
Members Whalebot Posted July 19, 2006 Members Posted July 19, 2006 "Epi Masterbilt, it's not just a crappy Epiphone"I am now a paid endorser. They give me free Elixers.I love mine actually.

This is my first acoustic, so I can't really judge it compared to others. The neck is a V shape, very comfortable. Not too big either. The nut width hasn't bugged me, and I play Fender electrics.
Members EvilTwin Posted July 28, 2006 Members Posted July 28, 2006 I got to play another Epi Masterbuilt AJ today -- sunburst finish, spruce on mahogany (and the nut width was perfect on this one). WHAT A GUITAR! Complete lap cannon. But it could do fingerstyle justice, too. It was $650 with case, and already had a pickup system in it. I almost bought it. I never thought I'd say this, but the Epi slope shoulder not only walked over every guitar in that room, but to my ears it was better than the used Larrivee L-10V I played two weeks ago (I NEVER thought I'd say an Epi was better than a Larry). You've got a helluva guitar, Kaleb.
Members TXTooMuch Posted July 28, 2006 Members Posted July 28, 2006 I am going to have to get out this weekend, and look at those.

Members bandstuff8385 Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 Hi All! I've had the same ax since it first became available in Canada (1 1/2 years) and use it on gigs. I own a 1971 Guild D-40, which might be a bit better, but I hate taking it out to bars, so the Epiphone goes instead. It is a very good value for the cash. Rob aka Bandstuff
Members recordingtrack1 Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 My buddy has the identical AJ. I played it today as a matter of fact. His has the Baggs pick up in it. Magnificent instrument. I really like it. Solid and LOUD. Very good git for the money. RT1
Members bohoo2u Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 Anyone know if these come left handed?

Woods? Also, if you don't mind, how much did it set you back at GC?
Members unpluggedthumb Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 rosewood back and sides go for around 650 at GC which I think incudes a really nice hard gigbag/case. the mahogany sides and back ones are like 550 at GC
Members TXTooMuch Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I went to one of my local GCs and looked at these guys, pretty sweet. The ones I looked at all seemed pretty solid, and played nicely.
