Members theGOOCH Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 Do you find it sounds best to "go with" the natural brightness of the guitar and use really bright strings or use warmer strings for more balance?
Members Cmogi10 Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 I've tried tons of brands on my taylor and I ended up liking the sound of Elixer nano's the most...Taylors and Elixers? Scandalous
Members Blackwatch Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 Taylors and Elixers? Scandalous I'm right there with you brother. A 712 with Nanos....And if anybody that has a problem with it... Too Bad

Members theGOOCH Posted July 29, 2006 Author Members Posted July 29, 2006 Do you guys stick with the mediums or go light?
Members Preacher Will Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 Martin phospor-bronze in medium. Bright for the first day or so then its just right. . .
Members Cmogi10 Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 I use lights, I think they come stock with lights, atleast the non-dreads do.
Members theGOOCH Posted July 29, 2006 Author Members Posted July 29, 2006 Oh yeah, I guess the non-dreads do. Any Taylor dread players switch to lights?
Members Cmogi10 Posted July 29, 2006 Members Posted July 29, 2006 12's are perfect for me...sometimes I wish I owned a dread though, so I can stick some medium or heavy string's on it and whack away.
Members guitarist21 Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 New Elixers on a Taylor are wayyyy bright for my taste. I prefer to use something warmer. Martin's strings are pretty good. I'm pretty sure they don't make 11's, but I'm fine with 12's. The 12's give it a bigger sound than I think the 11's would.Ellen (www.myspace.com/ellenangelico)
Members theGOOCH Posted July 30, 2006 Author Members Posted July 30, 2006 I like SP's. The lights are 12's right?
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 .012 through .053 Poly Lights on my Guild JF-4 (standard tuning) .010 through .047 Poly Light 12s on my Taylor 355 (standard) Mixed sets of Medium and Light Polys on my "tuning guitars". BTW, Gooch warm strings like the Polys DO balance out the brightness of Piezo USTs, but not just on Taylors.

They make some 10's and I think they are called Marquis, but 10's are way too light for my taste. My acoustic taste, anyway.Ellen (www.myspace.com/ellenangelico)
Members t60 fan Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 I use PB nano's on my six string - still have original nano's on my new 12er.
Members Blackwatch Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 I used to go .12's but I'm getting lighter as the years go by. I use .10's now....partly because I'm playing more blues and there easier to bend....

Members MyM.O. Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 Elixers suit Taylors. I use nanoweb lights.
Members theGOOCH Posted July 31, 2006 Author Members Posted July 31, 2006 Do Elixers really last longer like they claim? 'cuz good lawd, thats a lot of money!
Members zb0430 Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I just can't bring myself to like elixers. They don't even manufacture their strings themselves, they use crappy strings to coat and their methods for coating leave a flakey mess all over the place. If you want coated strings, I'd go with the D'addario Light gauge EXP's in either bronze 80/20 or Phosphor Bronze 92/8. They coat the bronze wrap wire before winding it around the core, saving some tone, eliminating most of the flaking problems, and the strings are, IMHO, of higher quality than the elixers. I strongly dislike coated strings, let me point that out, but these don't sound quite so bad, and for convenience's sake, I stick them on my 814ce. I play and practice pretty often, and have severe acid hands that can eat through strings in no time, so uncoated strings last, to my ear, only about a week. These can go about 3 weeks without having any drop off in tone. They do provide a tad bit different sound than the elixers, maybe toning down a bit of brightness, but describing tone is like teaching calculus to a pre-schooler. It cant really be done, so you gotta try for yourself. The D'addario's are cheaper than elixers too, only $9.99 at GC. That being siad, I have never EVER tried a set of strings that I really liked... its like finding the PERFECT guitar that can do it all... I don't think it exists...
Members studyscoot Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 Yeah, how is that blackwood 12 working out?

I haven't had this problem, but you really don't have to like them. To each their own. What I find so interesting is how crazy with hate some people get when you mention Taylor and or Elixor in the same sentence......
Members zb0430 Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 Exactly, to each his own. Just thought I'd offer my opinion. That's what the forum is all about, right? My opinion isn't the end all decision maker, and nither is anyone else's. We just toss our two cents into the ring and let the thread started take from it what he will. Back on topic, suprisingly, Elixers don't seem consistent to me. Call me strange, but from set to set, same strings, some sound better than others on the same guitar. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but my ear normally doesn't lie to me. BTW, I like the music from the site in your sig. Your band? Keep it up, if so.
Members t60 fan Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 Originally posted by studyscoot Yeah, how is that blackwood 12 working out? I really like her. Everything you and I have discussed about blackwood tone translates beautifully to the 12. If your ever in central OH you can try her out. BTW, did you see the D-03BW that just sold on ebay? I really wanted that one as it was just up the road in Columbus.
