Members d03nut Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 Lets' say someone hands you the "best" guitar -don't ask how or why- you've ever heard. The "theoretically impossible" yet-right-before your-eyes (ears) do-it-all that you've been searching for all your musical life. He then gives you the following two choices: 1) you can keep the guitar for yourself or 2) you can turn around at that very moment and sell it to the highest bidder (of which there are many). One catch though: obviously you will never get it back again or find another regardless of how much you'd be willing to pay. What's your "break-away" price? Obviously if you're just a collector who buys/sells guitars this isn't as "heartbreaking" a scenario as I imagine in to be in my head. Hey, it's a sunday.........
Members natasmi Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 Are they bidding money only? What if they are bidding a "human hunting" trip on a deserted Isle populated with Ginger and Mary Ann clones?.... tough call....tough call.
Members natasmi Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 Oh yea, sorry, it's Sunday and Hot here.
Members knockwood Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 I would trade it in a heartbeat... But only for a theoretically impossible wheel of brie. I love brie... But seriously... Actually finding "The One" would be fantastic... For a few minutes. Then I'd start being disappointed that the search is over. I'd trade that bitch. I'd do it and keep looking even though never finding another is a condition of the trade. Chasing after the impossible is exactly what I'm doing right now... It's fun.
Members guitarist21 Posted July 30, 2006 Members Posted July 30, 2006 I'd keep it. I've been looking for the perfect acoustic for waaaay too long now, and I'm tired of it. I'd keep it and I'd send it to Gibson Montana (or something) and have them make four more of them. Ellen

I did the {censored}-it-all-bum-kin for a while. Funny thing about it was the complete and utter "disconnection" left me kind of mentally desolate. No phones, stores or entertainment as we know it here (TV, movies, etc.) It was like Mick "Crocodile" Dundee going to NY City when I returned. Weird. Had fun though. I did have my guitar and had to order strings via HAM radio (Roger that...squelch...Martin Papa Bravo Lights, over and out...squelch) Spent so much time playing I swear I could have recorded on single-takes.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 well i wouldn't move or cut off the world... nothing like that... i'd just pay a years worth of bills and just chill out...

Members Kap'n Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I've never met a piece of gear that couldn't be replaced by something different, yet equally as nice. And having one "the grail" for me would get boring. Having an awesome OM wouldn't keep me from playing a D, or a strat, or whatever. One guitar can not do it all.
Members MyM.O. Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I'd keep it. Unless I could get an astronomical (five, six figures) price for it. Then I'd pay all my bills and buy a "second best".
Members kwakatak Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I'm currently "just sitting here watching the wheels" as it were and somebody did hand me what I'd built up as my Holy Grail guitar. I don't intend to ever turn it over, even should the bills get out of hand. Getting back to the tune out/turn off thing there are indeed benefits, especially if you've got a good guitar on your knee! I doubt I'd have taken up the guitar if I'd had cable TV and lived closer to the mall when I was taking lessons as a kid/teen.
Members WaveRay Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I'd take it, a solar powered generator, a humidifier, a de-humidifier, and a keg of St. Pauli Girl into a cave and roll the perverbial big rock in front of the entrance. My price would be my life.
Members babablowfish Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 Having the "Holy Grail" and then selling it. That could very likely lead to a lifetime of regret, unfulfilled longing and self-recrimination. And that is the kind of suffering that could make some great songs!
Members dwerlin Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I'd sell it for $500,000. Since I'm no professional musician I'd rather have a nice house to live in for the rest of my life.
Members SpaceCowboy409 Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 I've never believed in "the one" or "holy grail" when it comes to guitars. I think they all can pretty much be lumped into 4 catagories: Great Really good OK Crap So I wouldn't hesitate to take a pile of dough from someone who doesn't share my beliefs.
Members JasmineTea Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 SPAM: I have here with me a guitar with God almighty's signature on it. It comes with documentation stating that God indeed owned and played this guitar for an entire melinium, notarized by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Serious enquiries only.

Members zb0430 Posted August 1, 2006 Members Posted August 1, 2006 How could one who chases perfect tone ever THINK of getting rid of that perfection for mere money? Bah...
Members guitarcapo Posted August 1, 2006 Members Posted August 1, 2006 No guitar is worth more than 5 grand or so....
