Members chiro972 Posted August 3, 2006 Members Posted August 3, 2006 OK, so I go to GC with the intention of playing a few guitars. I had already set my mind to buy an Ibanez AW200vvec. There was one on ebay that I could have for $400 which is about $200 less than MF sells it for. I have an AW100 that I like, but I figured I try a few things, One of the first things I see is a lightly used AW200 just like I was going to buy. I played it a bit and was totally underwhelmed. Didn't sound as good as my 100. So now my plans have gone out the window and I started playing everything. I played a Parkwood that was nice, but didn't really move me or make me think I was getting anything more than what I had. Then I played a Breedlove AC25 plus and really liked how it felt and sounded, but it was a little thin for the flatpicking style I like. I looked all over for the AD25 thinking it would sound fuller. A salesman came and asked what I was looking for. While he looked on the computer I played a few Martins and was surprisingly underwhelmed again. I played a $2000 Gibson acoustic electric that I absolutely loved, but I just couldn't spend that much and frankly I aint good enough to justify that. On to some taylors. Nice, but again, the ones I liked were way out of my range. Finally, the salesman said they did have the AD25 and we found it and I played it. Instant love. Looked at the price...Crap! The wife is gonna kill me. Well, they had 12 months same as cash financing, so I went for it. I have to say that at least in this honeymoon period, I'm thrilled to death with this guitar. I also totally agree with those who say you really need to try before you buy. I have bought all my electrics via mail order or ebay and have been totally happy, but I would have made a big mistake if I had not gone and played lots of guitars. I also realize that sound in acoustic guitars is so very subjective. I played $2500 guitars that I didn't like the sound of at all, and while many complain that Gibson acoustics are not the best, I found the ones I played to sound wonderful. Thankfully the Breedlove I picked out sounds VERY nearly as nice as the Gibby and looks very cool as well.

Members babablowfish Posted August 4, 2006 Members Posted August 4, 2006 Great review of your experience! There really is no substitute for playing and discovering what's right for you. Congratulations on your new Breedlove. Enjoy!
Members chiro972 Posted August 4, 2006 Author Members Posted August 4, 2006 Thanks for the positive comments. I saw that they have gone up in price, but they didn't include a hardshell case before and the onboard tuner they have now is definitely handy. I think I'm gonna enjoy it. It's also nice having something that isn't instantly recognizeable. I did find a slight flaw. There is a small glob of clear finish (polyurethane?) down at the lower edge of the MOP binding. Not really a problem, but now I know it's there I'm sure I'll see it all the time. I think I'll live with it as the guitar just fits me and is set up very nicely.

You did well to try before buying, now you've got a great guitar that you love, instead of a mediocre one you thought you wanted. Sound is subjective and each acoustic guitar is an individual. Congrats on the Breedlove. And I've tried some Gibbys lately that I loved.

Members chiro972 Posted August 4, 2006 Author Members Posted August 4, 2006 I'll try to take some pics tonite. Unfortunately I don't have any recording equipment and don't feel like I am good enough for anyone to want to listen, so no clips for now. I did just get asked to play 4 services at church this weekend (big church) so I'll get a chance to see how it does on stage.
Members thedep3158 Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 Congrats on the Breedlove. They are great guitars. I just picked up a AC250SM- 12 string and am loving it. I was looking for the AC25SR but fell in love with the 12. Dep
Members zb0430 Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 Yeah, the Breedlove brand is definitely trustworthy. I was in the market for a high end acoustic and had my mind set on the Taylor 814ce, then I picked up a cedar topped Breedlove. I almost had a change of heart, but after alot of comparing, I stuck with the Taylor. Wished I could've taken them both home, though I don't even remember the model I played. It sounded bueatiful, I have to say.
