All help greatly appreciated
Members AK47 Posted August 9, 2006 Members Posted August 9, 2006 Why would you want to cut up an acoustic guitar to mount an electric guitar pickup? The concept of humbucking is to keep electronics quiet. Check acoustic guitar soundhole pickups. Several companies make humbucking pickups that drop right into your soundhole without modification to your guitar. If you want an electric guitar sound you must get an electric. If you want to have fun doing mods and don't mind damaging your guitar by all means have fun. You will probably have to glue wood under the sound board to hold your pickup ring. Maybe cut away some soundhole to fit pickup. get an endpin jack. I would also put volume and tone knobs somewhere. If the string spacing does not line up with the pickup poles it is still a no go. I can't believe I'm advising you how to cut up your guitar. Get a sound hole pickup.
Members guitarist21 Posted August 9, 2006 Members Posted August 9, 2006 I'm with AK47. I'm not sure its a great idea to bust up your guitar for a pickup like that. Unless you've tried something like it and you love how it sounds and you are hell bent on putting it in, I'd avoid it.You don't say what kind of acoustic you have. But if you're going to put it in and possibly cut up some of the area around the soundhole, please proceed with caution. I had a friend who though it would be cool to have a giant soundhole, and when he put the strings back on, the guitar basically broke. So don't hurt yourself or the guitar, if you can avoid it. Ellen
Members Freeman Keller Posted August 9, 2006 Members Posted August 9, 2006 September issue of AG magazine has a great article on amplifying an acoustic - on the news stands or on line. Covers the pros and cons of a sound hole p/u like AK47 suggests, as well as the other choices.
Members recordingtrack1 Posted August 9, 2006 Members Posted August 9, 2006 Please look at this before you start cutting on your guitar. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/LR-Baggs-iBeam-Active-Acoustic-Guitar-Pickup-System?sku=307112 or not, it's only a suggestion. RT1
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted August 10, 2006 Members Posted August 10, 2006 If you absolutely must use that (or any other electric guitar) P/U, it's possible to make a bracket, out of aluminum, that screws into the neck block, inside your guitar, and will suspend the P/U in the soundhole...a client asked me to do this to his Martin, because he felt the usual sound-hole P/Us dampened the top's vibrations too much. Pretty easy to make, if you have access to a vice, and it won't ruin your guitar.
