Members Cmogi10 Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 So I'm sitting there minding my own buisness at my local music store lusting over martins and the sort and this old fat creep comes in. Guys decked out with his 300 dollar sunglasses and little friend "yes m'am"ing him all over the place with a 5 thousand dollar guitar, not sure what kind, and I lean back because I figure anyone throwing that kind of money down on a guitar has to be able to play? Well that was not the case, the guy was horrible, played like me when I was 12 and playing for 2 years. He's the kinda guy that rattled of the specs of the guitar only because he memorized that the night before. God Grrrr

You don't need to know how to play guitar to buy one. All you need is money or a credit card. I listen to guys bitch about old guys buying sports cars and yuppies buying Harleys. Good news is that one day you will be an old guy with money or a credit card too. Keep living.
Members Chirpy_72 Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 I hope you picked up your cell phone, dialed 911 and asked them to send a Waaaaa-ambulance. A guy who makes some good scratch isn't allowed to learn to play guitar?
Members Sweb Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 Hey, my ex-boss bought them to hang on a wall in his house as decoration, per his interior decorator's grand plan, adjacent to a grand piano. The adjoining walls were decorated with all other stringed instruments including a harp. He doesn't play any instrument - just human beings by bullying. So, wasn't much fond of the guy as a human being but that room looked better than anything I've ever seen in any music store or boutique. Actually, he asked that I arrange the guitars on the wall in a particular manner. And, no, I had to wear cotton gloves lest I streak/mark them in some disgusting manner. So, I couldn't play them. He photographed the wall and I identified each guitar on the photo so he could later have brass escutcheons made to put beneath each guitar. Eccentricities are what they are and we all have them to some lesser or greater degree. The words that describe it in most forumites is by the acronym GAS.
Members knockwood Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 My GAS is no less stupid than the next guy's but at least it's relegated to {censored} I actually want to play. People have a right to do whatever they want with their money, but I think it's an awful shame to not use a beautiful instrument for its intended purpose. I hope to build guitars some day because I love them. If I'm ever able to turn out anything of quality, I pray it will actually be used to make music.

The man's living the dream, but yeah I know the type. Was calling you over to "arrange" his collection must have been his sick way of rubbing you nose in it?
Members recordingtrack1 Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 Live and let live. You know, I'd rather have a hundred dollar Esteban and know how to play it than five thousand dollar guitar and have to sit and look at it hanging on the wall. Where's the fun in that? Not that I have anything against money or people who have it, I just don't let myself get caught up in that have and have not thing anymore. It ain't worth the stress. RT1

The example I gave is just an illustration but he looks at life with a certain objectivity that seems devoid of joy in the simplest sense of the word as if life is an assignment. Weird. Knockwood - Couldn't agree with you more - especially on the GAS to build one. On another note, because vintage instruments are now considered safe bets for investment portfolios they are rapidly disappearing into vaults as assets never to be displayed/played again. I kinda wish they'd do something else and stay out of my psychosis.
Members Cmogi10 Posted May 14, 2006 Author Members Posted May 14, 2006 hey hey hey I wont lie, it's envy. I don't think he was a begginer, just a guy who tried to play and failed, he had that kind of ego. And I dont play to "smoke" anyone, but I know when I'm a better player that the guy next to me... Maybe with that 5 grand guitar will make him happy... But it would make me just as happy and I could make it sound musical.
Members riffmeister Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 I drive a 13 year old car. But I have loads of guitars. Does that make me a Yuppie?
Members min7b5 Posted May 14, 2006 Members Posted May 14, 2006 Good for him. I wish I could do that. If I had the money I

Members Tony Burns Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 Alot of these wannabees get their kicks out of pretending , probably in debt up to his eyeballs- Money wont buy you happiness but it can buy you some nice guitars !

Members scottgd Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 My nicest guitar is a Martin 000-28EC. Do I have the skills to play it to the fullest? Hell no. Are there people out there playing $250 guitars that could play it better? Hell yes. I played one about 10 years ago and found it to be pretty much the dream guitar for me. So 4 months ago I had the means and the oppertunity to get one. I make no excuses or appoligize. BTW, I'm 49 with a credit card.
Members fingerpicker Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 You really shouldn't get bothered about stuff like that. In fact it's really noones business what that fella does with his money, if he can play, what he drives, etc. Someone probably put those specs in his ear before he got there, maybe someone who knows how to play better and what to look for.
Members T.B. Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 Hey! It's folks like that, who keep the economy going.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 if you get upset about what other people spend their money on, its your fault... who gives a {censored}.
Members Andrewrg Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 Who knows, he may have been buying it for someone else.
Members knockwood Posted May 15, 2006 Members Posted May 15, 2006 Hey folks, I know for some it's instinctive to want to rush to the defense of the poor downtrodden rich against the envy-born hostility of those of us who are at least currently less fortunate, but ease up on the guy a wee bit, huh? Hating the rich is an American tradition. Like apple pie... and Martin...
