When I'm kicked back a pickin' it seems the dogs come wandering in the room and lay down at my feet. If I'm playing something upbeat our bird will actually dance and vocalise on the down beats. My question is; Does anyone else have pets that seem to love guitar? Or are mine just weird.

My pets are my biggest fans.

My dog likes when I play my acoustics, but when I had my strat and would play with a lot of gain or reverb she would kind of freak out :o

My cat is scared to death of all things amplified. Turn something on and strum a power chord and he's out of there.

Dog could care less.

My sister has a horse. I took a guitar to the barn one day and the horse decided it was an alien from the planet Dwakurtyerjhb and proceeded to try to attack it.:freak: Thankfully, he was in his stall and I was safely outside of it and nothing was harmed. But he didn't like it at all.

My wife's dog lays at my feet when I play. My wife started taking mandolin lessons about a year and a half ago and the dog would leave the room when she started playing. Well, the wife took that as critisism and felt bad.Gracie (the dog) has since began laying down while she plays now too so all is cool.

My cats are terrified of the guitar itself, but they like it when I play something soft...usually classical music. Especially since I got my new guitar, its super soft and they seem to like the slow tempo classical or anything picked instead of strummed.

They also like being sung too. One of them will always jump on my lap and fall asleep when I sing...it so cute.

My cat has psychotic snit-fits about every little thing but has a special hatred of guitar. When she sees me pick it up she knows that I'm not going to pay her any mind, so she'll go off on a tear and run full-tilt around the house and find someplace high up to yowl and complain.

OTOH, she is a wonderful lap cap and will follow me around like a loyal little dog. It's pretty nice so long as you take measures to prevent "love bites".

Cats are weird creatures but I'm also not a dog person.

My dogs are kinda neutral critics unless I pull on the fiddle. Cry/howl then hide.

My parrot loves it. Dances, sings and whistles. I always let him join in when we jam. One of my music mentors has a habit of saying "yea" when someone hit a good lick. My parrot does now too. When I'm practicing and hit a good one the bird give me the same "yea" in my buddies voice. If I muff it I get a "huh". He knows the difference.

I once dog-sat for a friend. So I sat in the back yard one day with my guitar beside the German Shepherd. One note and the dog showed his teeth and got into a mean posture. No songs that day!!

my current animals are totally indifferent to my playing, but I used to have a cat that would physically attack me when I played the harmonica. She would howl and then jump on me and bite me.

I guess I sucked at harmonica.

 Sore subject

My 3 year old Doberman is having problems with his leg or hip. Hopefully its just an injury that will heal and not hip displasia which is a pretty dreaded condition for a big dog. Its hard for even the vet to pinpoint the problem since you can't ask him where it hurts. The x-rays are normal, so hopefully its just a sprain or something.

He likes my playing and lies at my feet when I jam.

We're asking for mojo, prayers, or whatever you got!

In college I had the world's coolest budgie, and that guy would sing his ass off when I played.

When I was a kid at home the cat would be hypnotized by my violin playing, but I think it had more to do with watching the bow go back and forth than the sounds. Sometimes it would try to sneak up and attack it.

Kwakatak, my cat is exactly like that, including the little bites if you don't pay enough attention to him (and sometimes even when you do). He follows me everywhere, sometimes it drives me crazy. He's what's called a Main Coon Cat, a breed I had never heard of before his arrival, and apparently that kind of loyalty is one of their defining characteristics. He loves to curl up on the table next to me when I fingerpick, but gets all mad and leaves when I strum anything, especially if it's loud. I keep thinking one of these days he's going to attack the guitar, but he hasn't, yet.

So some friends were over jamming and the banjo player said "Keller, you know your cat just pissed in my banjo case?" and I said, "No, what key is it in?"

One sure way to get the phat cat to leave the room is to get out a reso. Also works on wives, but we were talking pets, right?

the GOOCH

Sorry to hear about your Dobie. I pray everything comes out OK. Our pets are members of our family.

Thanks AK,

He's part of the family for us too. Sorry to be a bummer on the light hearted thread, but we took him to the doc and he possibly has Wobbler's Syndrome which is even worse than hip displasia

Hamlet, my mini-pig, will set his hams down in my studio or on the porch and stare mesmerized when I either play slide or my Hawaiian guitar...not sure what it about that sound, but he'll sit and listen for hours. Standard guitar doesn't seem to interest him much.

My wife, Georgia's "rat-dog", Samson, sings along with my harmonica and/or my daughter's fiddle...unfortunately, this drives Georgia crazy! :p
