Members Michael Martin Posted July 31, 2006 Members Posted July 31, 2006 ...and head for the lake for a week-and-a-half. Wife and daughters, the pop-up camper, and this afternoon I'm going to go buy a Chinese dreadnought that sells for $48 (new!) at the local pawnshop. It will be my new camping guitar. I've been using a little 3/4 Applause for camping the past few years, but I want bigger sound. I played this plywood thing earlier today--not bad sound or action--I mean, why not? Not much to lose! (I'd love to take my 'bird or my Tak, but way too risky to leave those things lying around in a campground.) The name on the headstock is "Lauren". Come to think of it, it's hard to tell what it's made of--no woodgrain apparent on the outside because of the paint job...maybe it's made of compressed rice stalks or freeze-dried tofu...? Recycled chopsticks? I'll let y'all know how it goes. Keep up the good work while I'm gone...

Members Kap'n Posted August 1, 2006 Members Posted August 1, 2006 I bought one of these as my 'firewood cheapie.' It spends its life in the desert at my mom and dad's, and I visit it once a year. For a $99 guitar, it really wasn't that bad at all. It's certainly miles better than the Gibson Blueridge I owned back in the 80's.
Frets99 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I love the post headingGonna buy me a plywood cheapieTo take along on the rideGonna play it till my kids are sleepyThen I'm gonna pull out my slide.I love my plywood cheapieIt rides along with meMy little plywood cheapieFor all the world to see. :D

Frets99 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 At GC, they have some kinda deal where if you buy 10 packs of an elixir like brand of strings. (might be elixer, I didn't read it too closely but it's the same long lasting kind of string) for $9.90 each ($99.00) you can get a free Jasmine. I don't much care for Elixirs but I know they cost more than $9.90 a set. Seems like a bargain for anybody who likes those strings.
Members Stackabones Posted August 1, 2006 Members Posted August 1, 2006 I wanna buy a plywood cheapie. Gonna roll some quarters and dimes. When I buy that plywood cheapie, Everyone will have a real good time. Ok, Frets99, that's three verses. Just enough to make a real song! Cut it and post!!!

Members dwerlin Posted August 1, 2006 Members Posted August 1, 2006 eh, nevermind, i just checked out their flyer. it's 10 sets of D'Addario EXP12's or EXP13's (neither of which are a gauge I would use), and they regularly sell for $9.99 a set anyway.

Frets99 Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 BTW - done in about half an hour this morning before work while reading the lyrics off the forum!!So be kind..
Members Stackabones Posted August 3, 2006 Members Posted August 3, 2006 YESSIR!!! Frets99! Great vibe! Of course, it's different than the one I've been singing in my head for the past couple of days--now it's sure to be influenced (replaced) by the classic Frets99 track!
Members MyM.O. Posted August 3, 2006 Members Posted August 3, 2006 That was great! Best song I heard all day.Seriously, I got a kick out of it. And a chuckle .If you perform, you should include that tune.

Hey Stack. If you have recording stuff, toss up your version. I've actually done this before with folks. Collab'd on lyrics and everyone took it home and came back with how they heard it. It was way cool. Here's a link to my version of that tune.Drinkin Bout the Future MyM.Mo! Ya know, with a little work on the phrasing, Yeah, it'll work for sure!!

Hows that for plywood cheapie!!! :p Totally. Fooking. Awesome, F99!!! Just got back from the lakes (Interlochen area of Michigan). The great irony of all this is that I didn't buy the Lauren "plywood cheapy" after all. I hadn't noticed that the floor model (only one they had at the pawnshop) was not only missing a string, but also a bridge pin--and I didn't have time to go find one before we bugged out.Anyway, I took the little Applause along, and wrote lotsa new stuff. I really do like it--nice neck--I just want more boom than that little body can produce. You can't really whale on it to good effect, and I play really hard sometimes (I have NONE of F99's subtlety).Good to be back, but now the damn semester begins...
