The Dread's sound is related to it's size and bracing. You can't make a small guitar sound like a big guitar. I've never heard of a 00 or 000 sounding anything like a large bodied Dread sized guitar. Maybe someone else has.
Members tirone00 Posted August 6, 2006 Author Members Posted August 6, 2006 Yeah i know the body shapes and their sounds but there has to be something out there.
Members rjoxyz Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 I recently bought a Martin 000-15s and was shocked by the strong bass response and volume/projection from such a small body. I guess that is an advantage of the 12 fret design. However, the minute I switch from the 000 to my HD-28, I realize it cannot come close to the huge sound of the dred. I know I am comparing mahogany to rosewood, but that is not the reason behind the difference we are talking about.
Members Hudman Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 Simple answer: No. They are different animals.

Members Tony Burns Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 John makes some nice guitars - he built me a DXN-jumbo white lady back in 1981 ( a wood match for John Denvers ) that is really boomy , its a super instrument but you have to be in the right mood to play it -it is almost to overpowering at times -
Members Old_Joe_Clark Posted August 6, 2006 Members Posted August 6, 2006 I don't think that the loudness is all that distinguishes a dred from a smaller body. The tone is different. The acoustics of the boxes are different.
Members Misha Posted August 7, 2006 Members Posted August 7, 2006 I tried a parlor that was LOUD a couple of weeks ago... it was at the SIMM in Montreal... and the guitar was made by Bruce Sexauer!Price: 8K $US!!!! A little bit less expensive... ... I tried a Yamaha parlor... don't remember the model though and it was surprisingly good! Maybe it was just that one!I should have bought it! If only I could find the model. The price was arround 500$CAD.

Listening to a sound clip online, I think it's pretty much impossible to make any kind of accurate judgement regarding acoustic volume. I was just amazed that the depth and smokiness and complexity I was hearing was coming out of such a small git.
Members Emmy55 Posted August 13, 2006 Members Posted August 13, 2006 Larrivee L series has "parlor" size guitars that sound awesome! Seagull also. ....and then there's the Santa Cruz models, but I don't have that kind of coin.

Members postalsock Posted August 13, 2006 Members Posted August 13, 2006 most dreds over 500 bucks have similar volume.
Members knowspicker Posted August 13, 2006 Members Posted August 13, 2006 If you want a smaller guitar to sound "more" like a dread put medium strings on it. That seems to give them a bigger guitar sound. IMHO
Members guitarist21 Posted August 13, 2006 Members Posted August 13, 2006 Originally posted by Hudman Simple answer: No.They are different animals. I am so with Hudman here. I'm in the market for a smaller acoustic, simply because I'm small and don't like the way big guitars dwarf me on stage. I've found that you just don't get a big sound with a small guitar. Try jumbos. They are still big guitars, but the smaller waist feels like you're playing a small guitar. Like I said, though, they are still big. So you're probably going to have to compromise something. Ellen
Members Red House Posted August 13, 2006 Members Posted August 13, 2006 You really can't. If you use an amplified system, some good eq-ing can shape your tone a little closer to a dreds though.
Members t60 fan Posted August 14, 2006 Members Posted August 14, 2006 For what it's worth, Martin 000's do have pretty good bass response, but as everyone else has said, will not sound like a dread.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted August 14, 2006 Members Posted August 14, 2006 Originally posted by postalsock most dreds over 500 bucks have similar volume. this doesn't make any sense... i know the dude from nickel creek flatpicks on a webber OM... another thing to consider would be an OM shape with a deeper body... how long have you had the Maton? and did you compare other guitars to it when you bought it? My opinion on Matons that i've played, dreads and small bodies alike, is that they sounded really dead and over braced to me... again, i wonder how they'd sound with some playing time... if they'd loosen up...

Agreed, I have a 000-16 and while it sounds very nice, I have to really strum it hard (with pick) to get it sound close to a dread.

As the self-proclaimed biggest Nickel Creek fan in the history of the universe, the dude from Nickel Creek (Sean Watkins) actually uses Bourgeois guitars. You can find them online at www.pantheonguitars.com. I seriously love Nickel Creek.Ellen
