Members Hotrod Lincoln Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 Used isn't an option for me because I live in a smallish town in Canada, so I have to go used. I'm obviously going to try out a crapload of guitars, but I want to narrow the testing down a little if I can. Here are the criteria: $600 or less new, don't even bother mentioning used (not being snotty, just saying it's pointless)NO electric acoustics (already have a tak, i want one without electronics)NO cutaways What would you suggest?
Members Whalebot Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 Epiphone Masterbilt, you can find a Martin 15 series dread for $650
Members vteckid22 Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 $600 Canadian? Then Im gonna have to say the Seagull or Simon & Patrick guitars (Owned by the same company, Godin). Here where I live you can get them for about 300-500 CAD.
Members Rickkkk Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 Where are you in Canada ? I second the opinion of the person who suggested the Godin labels. I have one of their least expensive lines (Art & Lutherie) and am incredibly impressed with its sound, feel and playability so far. I got it for under $400, tax included. For up to $600, I agree that the S&P and Seagulls are attainable. All of the Godin labels are readily available here in Montreal (they're made almost right next door to us, in the Eastern Townships ...). I think the Godin acoustics are some of the best values I've ever seen. I also like Yamaha, but am less familiar with their recent models. Cheers !
Members Hotrod Lincoln Posted August 25, 2006 Author Members Posted August 25, 2006 I'm in Saint John, NB. I actually meant $600 US. basically about $1000 canadian.
Members chiro972 Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 Definitely try the epiphone masterbilt's. I am partial to the slope shouldered dread with the rosewood back and sindes. Nothing in that price range sounds as good. In fact, I wish I had a spare $600 laying around and I would buy one in a second.

Members dwerlin Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 I have a Martin DX-1 and I love it. I'd suggest at least trying it out if you can.

Members recordingtrack1 Posted August 25, 2006 Members Posted August 25, 2006 I'm in for the Epiphone. Rosewood b/s spruce top. Solid git. good money. Lot of good press on this channel. RT1:thu:
Members MyM.O. Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 My two favorite guitars in this price range are the Masterbuilt and the Taylor 110. The Taylor can be had new for around $600, and don't dismiss it just because it has a laminate b/s. It sounds every bit as good or even better than many solid woods. These two are pretty consistent - a lot of them I try sound good. I don't find that the Godins are, though I like the Godin brands. But you've got to play a few to find a good one, IMO. Oh, yeah, I like Alvarez too. If you can find one in the Professional or Masterworks series these are really nice. Might be out of your price range, though. But even the lower series, Artist and Regent, offer a lot for the money and you can hit on a really good one if you try a few.
Members EvilTwin Posted August 27, 2006 Members Posted August 27, 2006 I adore Seagull and LaSiDo guitars, but at this price point you can fish around for an all-solid wood guitar. The slope-dread Epi Masterbuilts really are amazing. Tacoma makes an amazing guitar, too. I bought my DM-18 in this price range, and the only dreads that have equalled it cose three to four times as much. Well, almost...which brings me to... The new Guild GAD series. All-solid and in your price range. I just played 'em today, and WOW. The GAD-25 was $489.00 w/HSC, and worth EVERY penny. I immediately came home and played my Tacoma as a comparison. The Guild didn't have the outright balls of my DM-18, but it was warmer overall (a 'hog top will do that). Not necessarily better, just different. And AMAZING. Martin's 15-series is in this price range, too. And if you look around, you might find a Larrivee -03 around this price point. I think Garrison makes a very interesting guitar, but they're a love 'em or hate 'em thing.
