Members 1esotericguy Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 So you know how you just dig through YOUTUBE and end up watching stuff that wouldn't normallly interst you...? Well, I found this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYAeMPubZlQ Nothing exceptional, but I started practicing some blues licks over it for fun. Here's the question:She's capo-ed to 'A' and the dude is not. But the dude is playing the same chords. Why does this work? Am I stupid? Is he tuned up 2.5 steps? (kidding) And what brand OM is that? YouTube is ridiculous.

YouTube is ridiculous. I'm not a music theory guy, but when he plays a G, Avril is playing a B. Therefore, she is playing the 3rd note in the G major scale, or the second note in the G major chord. It works that way on all of the chords: He plays a C major, she plays an E - He plays a D, she plays an F. I'm not sure if I'm using the proper lingo - I just play the guitar. It's a very common practice when using multiple guitars. It gives the music a bigger sound. I'm not sure what brand guitar she is playing. It looks like it could be a Taylor headstock with a Gibson body. Could be a Guild. I'm not sure.
Members 1esotericguy Posted August 26, 2006 Author Members Posted August 26, 2006 Cool. Makes sense. I'll have to try it though. Seems like it should only sound good with the 4th or the fifth of the scale. Obviously I'm wrong though.

I'm Mr. Anti-Music Theory. The more I think, the worse I play. It's been working OK that way for 20+ years.
Members mikeSF Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 no, that is not at all what is happening here. they are both playing C-G-F, just in different positions. he is doing the standard open position chords. she is capoed at the 5th fret and playing regular old G-D-C form open chords, which at that capo degree transpose to C-G-F. nothin funny occurring, just 2 different voicings of the same 3 chords. hope that helps
Members mikeSF Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 cute face when she plays the wrong 3rd chord and has to fix it.

I watched closer they are playing an F in place of a D. I assumed they were playing a G,C, D progession. I saw her play the open D shape - I assumed he did too. As stated earlier, it was a guess on my part.

Members DADGADammit Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 d, c, and g are probably the only chord shapes she can reliably play live........
Frets99 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Originally posted by DADGADammit d, c, and g are probably the only chord shapes she can reliably play live........ :D but she's sooooo cute...... doesn't that count for anything anymore???

Don't know what she can play, but that's all that's in the song. It's a very boring song to play, IMO. I had the impression from her pop hits and music videos that she was a better singer than she seems to be on this Youtube video. So this is the real Avril stripped of the pop star productioning?
