Members Tony Burns Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 My 71 Guild D-55's case is pretty shot , its an old martin from the 1960's ( one of the 4 chrome latch gray ones ) the paddings shot and it slops around in the case . Been looking at my Martins Geib case ( which i like ) and a vintage style case i bought with my Lucida concerto last winter- as well as a case my Greven's in ( think its an old Harptone ) The case that i bought for my Lucida is a Guardian Vintage case , very close to the Martin Geib - almost a dead ringer ( the catchs are a bit different ) but the case looks like it came from the same place. ? which doesnt make much sense -- the Martin Geib case costs a small fortune, so heres what i did - i ordered a vintage style case for the Guild like i have for the Lucida -( from musicians friend ) I have a gut feeling that the Martins Geib case ( from TKL ) was made in China , like the Lucidas - and TKL possibly had better or different latches put on it in the US ( or china ) - they are too close for comfort-- hey 49 bucks , its a better case than a upper end Guild case i bought about 15 years ago for my Yamaha ( as well as the Grevens ) -- what are your thoughts -Are we getting ripped off with these so called US cases , Which i feel are really coming from China --If Im nuts , i can accept that , but this isnt the first time someone has tried to pull the wool over my eyes--
Members Stackabones Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 Could be some deception there ... gotta watch out! I just found a good hard shell for my nylon-string at a pawn shop. Smelled like new guitar wood inside and the outside looked real nice after I cleaned it up. By the way, Tony, about your Lucida? Steel or nylon? What do you think of it? I've been thinking about getting a Lucida nylon cutaway with electronics as a backup. At $150, it seems like a deal. What are your experiences with them?
Members Tony Burns Posted August 26, 2006 Author Members Posted August 26, 2006 STACKABONES - i AM VERY FOND OF THE lUCIDA CONCERTO - COST ME ABOUT 600 PLUS ABOUT 30 + more for the case ( which is a super case ) the guitar is made by prudencio-saez ( hope i spelled that right ) and there version of the same guitar goes for around a thousand- mines not a cutaway, its a traditional classical -solid rosewood back and sides but with a cedar top - It is everything I expected it to be, comparable to guitars in the 1500 dollar range, im not just saying that - Iactually compared it to a Ramirez as well as a allambra ( both in the 1500 dollar range ) i feel the lucida had alot better tone and quality -- Ive also heard the next one down (Lucida ) , solid mahogany is good too - but Im not too familiar with the cutaway your talking about - Doesnt sound like alot of money, but Id check the return policy of the seller -- personnaly i would buy this guitar all over again it was a good decision , not alot of these 600 range instruments really are - good luck my friend-- Tony
Members Stackabones Posted August 26, 2006 Members Posted August 26, 2006 Thanks for the review, Tony! Sounds like the Lucida's a winner. The one I'm looking at is definitely in the budget range, and it's good to know that they are making quality guitars.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted August 27, 2006 Members Posted August 27, 2006 No idea who makes modern Guild cases, but my early-70's era F-212XLs' cases were both made by Harptone. My JF-4's original (modern) case wasn't nearly as sturdy, but I lucked onto a Larrivee jumbo case in very good condition for $90.
