Members allthumz Posted August 30, 2006 Members Posted August 30, 2006 I am shocked I tell you! Shocked! I didn't see that kind of demand/inflation to develop. They aren't rare by any means are they? Meanwhile, I picked up a Norman B50 for $199.00. I feel like I got a great deal. Seriously though, is anybody else surprised by this? I want a top quality 1970s FG Yamaha but I don't want to pay $400 for it. - Robert
Members babablowfish Posted August 30, 2006 Members Posted August 30, 2006 If you want "a top quality 1970s FG Yamaha" I highly recommend an FG-340. But the days of getting them cheap are over. The old FGs were built solid as a rock and put out amazing tone and volume which defies the conventional wisdom about their laminate construction. I have had FG-140s but the neck was too thick to do a "thumb over" note easily. The 160, 335, 340, 345 & 365S all get great reviews.

The FGs have really been talked up and do get glowing reviews but do you think they are worth $400? I mean in a tone to value ratio? Interestingly enough, I met a used guitar dealer today in Wilmington NC and he just sold a FG150 for $100. He gave the previous owner $50 for it. I guess that is why I am stunned by $431. It seems the internet market is inflated and at least the Wilmington local market is depressed. - Robert

Members Blackwatch Posted August 30, 2006 Members Posted August 30, 2006 The FG 150 was the first guitar I ever bought and I will always hold a soft spot for them. My wife has noticed that there is a guy buying up all the Nippon Gakki guitars. I haven't checked it out yet but the 150's for the most part have been going for around $150.I'd be interested to know if the one that sold for $431 actually got paid for..........
Members EvilTwin Posted August 30, 2006 Members Posted August 30, 2006 Doesn't surprise me. There are old laminate archtops that people buy on eBay for $250 to $300 that have cracked tops and need neck resets. A few years ago you'd be lucky to get $50 for one. Some guitars get a cult following, and people go buy them up crazy. Great deal on that Norman, though.

After having 8 frets replaced, a bone nut and saddle put in, set-up and lots of work to the finish I spent somewhere close to $400.00 on it. It was absolutely worth it.
Members Freeman Keller Posted August 30, 2006 Members Posted August 30, 2006 I bought mine new for a hundred bucks in 1969. It has been thru a lot with me. To me, it is priceless

At that, she needed a neck reset, frets and I replaced her tuners with a new pair of open gear Sta-tites. A couple of years ago, I got in a bidding war on Ebay for a FG-110E. Perfect, mint condition! My last bid was $320 if I remember correctly and at the last minute some guy snipped me. After I calmed down, I shook my head in disbelief in what I was willing to pay for that 110E. Of course, I didn't think twice about getting a neck reset on a 50 buck guitar either. I hope whomever bought the $400 Yam FG, doesn't have to spend any exta dollars for major repair work. I really want one for sentimental reasons but if I happen to get a great sounding guitar n the deal, well then so much the better! Would anybody here at HC pay $400+ for a Yamaha that they had never played? Would Yamahas from the 1970s be consistent enough so that you would be assured of getting a great sound? I don't know. - Robert
Members babablowfish Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 I guess wouldn't pay $400.00 for a guitar I had not played. I guess that is why I bought my FG-340 on the cheap and then spent the money fixing it up, because by then I saw and heard the potential. I have heard variation between guitars of the same make and model including old Yamaha FGs. Some sound amazing, but others not so much (although they still sound very good.) I bought another FG-340 on eBay (just like the first one) and it just didn't come close to the first even after I had mammoth ivory nut and saddle put in. I traded it in on my Parkwood. So yeah, there are no guarentees when you buy on eBay. By the way, the seller of the second FG-340 seriously misrepresented its condition. On the other hand, you are not likely to find an old FG in a store. My advice would be to follow the sales on eBay and be patient and you will find one at a price you are willing to pay and take a risk on.

I agree that patience is the key. And maybe getting a money back guarantee if their are any structural issues. I might be able to find a cheap FG that has cosemetic issues and fix those. - Robert
Members Bitt81 Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 I have an FG 300 that I paid $300 new in 1976. I would gladly pay that much for another one if it was lost/stolen. That being said, $400+ for a FG 150 is pretty steep.
Members T.B. Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 Yep, they have a Yam FG-150 up for sale now on Ebay. Is anyone familiar with FG151? Music Go Round lists one with a DeMarzio (?) pickup. It looks to be in fine condition. - Robert
Members Blackwatch Posted September 1, 2006 Members Posted September 1, 2006 Wow...all these pics are making me misty eyed. My next guitar will be an FG150. And if anybody ever sees one with a cirgarette burn in between the Low E(thick E) tuner and the nut ....please let me know as I will pay dearly to get that particular guitar back.
