Members Hotrod Lincoln Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 It doesn't have to be a stricly acoustic song that you covered, but you do have to only play it with 1 acoustic . Anyway, what are your favorite covers to play on an acoustic? Me, I love playing CCR. It simple, yet fun. I'm starting to learn some Dylan songs, but it's hard to remember the damn lyrics and not fudge em up How about you?
Members dwerlin Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 To play and sing, I like Long Black Veil (Johnny Cash), Cortez the Killer (Neil Young), Angel from Montgomery (John Prine), The Maker (Daniel Lanois), I'll Back You Up (Dave Matthews), Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana version), Elderly Woman (Pearl Jam)

I've been spending all my time lately making stuff up, because my goal is to perform original work. Funny you ask this though, because I have been thinking of what covers I might include if I did decide to go that route. I haven't played CCR in a long time, but what great stuff. "Proud Mary" is one of the first songs I ever taught myself to play. Covers I love playing: Behind Blue Eyes (Townshend) Won't Get Fooled Again (ditto) Substitute (ditto) Heart to Hang Onto (ditto) Try Not to Breathe (REM) Ebow the Letter (ditto) Exit Music [From a Movie] (Radiohead) Lucky (ditto) Hey Hey What Can I Do (Led Zep) Gallows Pole (ditto) Thunder Road (Springsteen) If You See Her Say Hello (Dylan) Tangled Up In Blue (ditto) I share your love of, and frustration with, some of Dylan's stuff. I don't know how he ever learned his own stuff cold enough to play it without a lyric sheet! Of course, he has been known to change things up in live performances...maybe that's why...
Members jonthegm Posted August 31, 2006 Members Posted August 31, 2006 I'm still learning, but No Rain by Blind Melon is a guilty pleasure of mine...

Members dadgad7 Posted September 1, 2006 Members Posted September 1, 2006 I very much enjoy playing Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here - simple but nicely constructed tune. I play it solo, doing his first solo note for note, then improvise some nice blue type licks for the second time around. You really need a dreadnought for that one to sound right.very pretty tune!
Members guitarist21 Posted September 1, 2006 Members Posted September 1, 2006 Jack Johnson and John Mayer both write songs that sound great with just acoustic guitar and singing. And, as a girl, if I tranpose them up a couple steps, it gives them a new sound but a familiar feel. I also cover In My Life (The Beatles) at almost every show I play. Flying on the Ground (Buffalo Springfield) is a great tune as well. Ellen

Members catdaddy Posted September 3, 2006 Members Posted September 3, 2006 This thread is really a great tribute to the eclectic tastes of the forumites that have posted. I've got to admit that I was simply astounded to see songs like The Maker (Daniel Lanois), Laughing (David Crosby), and Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) being covered by folks here. Those are some favorites of mine and ones I've never heard anyone cover! Love to hear your versions dwerlin, recordingtrac1 and Eric Martin. My fave:Political Science (Randy Newman)

Members kwakatak Posted September 3, 2006 Members Posted September 3, 2006 Here's my list with the following annotations: (1) Some I've been playing for a while and I pored over the tab when I learned them so feel I know them pretty well, (2) some I fake my way through but can get through the whole song without many hesitations, (3) others I only know parts of but just like to groove with and usually end up improvising with (on a good night) or only play parts of (on a not so good night). Many of these get played a lot, others not so much but when I do play them I usually have a good time on my couch. If I remember enough of them off the top of my head (usually on a nice quiet night with no distractions) I can play for a couple of hours without repeating any songs : =========================== Vincent (Starry Starr Night) - Chet Atkin's fingerstyle arrangement of Don McLean's tune (1) On Eagles' Wings - Pete Huntlinger's fingerstyle arrangement (1) The Water is Wide - Edward Gerhard's fingerstlye arrangement (1) In My Life - Laurence Juber (from LJ Plays the Beatles) (1) Why Georgia - John Mayer (2) Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughan (2) Life By The Drop - Stevie Ray Vaughan (1) Tightrope - Stevie Ray Vaughan (2) Life Without You - Stevie Ray Vaughan (3) Chitlins Con Carne - Stevie Ray Vaughan (3) Little Wing- Stevie Ray Vaughan (3) Riviera Paradise - Stevie Ray Vaughan (3) Friends - Led Zeppelin (2) Wonderful One - Led Zeppelin (3) Who We Are - Bill Deasy (local Pittsburgh musician) (2) Naked - Bill Deasy (local Pittsburgh musician) (2) Wishing Well - Bill Deasy (local Pittsburgh musician) (2) Angelina - Tommy Emmanuel (1) Those Who Wait - Tommy Emmanuel (1) Questions - Tommy Emmanuel (2) All I Want Is You - U2 (2) People Get Ready - Jeff Beck (3) Cindy and Norm - Guy Van Duser (1) La Vie En Rose - Chet Atkin's arrangement from the solo sessions CD (1) Windy and Warm - John Loudermilk/Chet Atkins/Tommy Emmanuel all mixed up in my own informal arrangement (2) Ave Maria - Chet Atkins' arangement of of the classical Schubert composition (3) Boulevard - John Knowles (1) Wild World - Cat Stevens (2) The Fisherman - Simon Fox (2) Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton (1) Change the World - Eric Clapton (2) More Than Words - Extreme (1) The Dance - Garth Brooks (a fingerstlye arrangement that I found in the PowerTab archive before it go shut down) (1) The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks (3) The Closer You Get - Alabama (2) Hotel California - The Eagles (2) Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (1) Baby I Love Your Way - Peter Frampton (2) Peaceful Easy Feeling - The Eagles (2) ============================ ... and there are bound to be some more that I can't remember off the top of my head without pulling out some dusty tab sheets or poring through some of myold CDs.
