Members Yhz Posted September 27, 2006 Members Posted September 27, 2006 Hi Everybody , Are there any good pickups which you dont need to install IN the guitar and not too expensive like in the 50-100$ range ? if you know of something in that price range can you recommend me one ? I want to pot it on my Martin D-1 which has a LOT of Bass so i dont need bass BUT i dont want it to sound like a Tin pan when i plug it in . I went to a shop and saw these 2 pickups but didnt try them yet : ST-701 Guitar Sound Hole Pickup by Soho The Fender ACP-1, a high-quality soundhole pickup for acoustic steel string guitars, incorporates great acoustic tone with a quiet, humbucking design. You get well-defined and balanced output from its specially designed magnetic field, which can accommodate even the most articulate single-note lines. Whether you're plugging straight into your amp or directly into the PA, the tone remains truly acoustic. What do you think ? Thx .
Members S~R~O Posted September 27, 2006 Members Posted September 27, 2006 Is that the one you posted??? if so I would recomend a DI box with EQor a Fishman EQ PlusTo be able to balance your Signal/sound, how ever you want to call it....
Members Freeman Keller Posted September 27, 2006 Members Posted September 27, 2006 Last months issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine had a great article on all kinds of pickups for your acoustic. I believe it is the issue with the metal resonator on the cover - anyway I know it is on line and you can download and read the article.

Members EvilTwin Posted September 27, 2006 Members Posted September 27, 2006 There's plenty of good soundhold pickups out there. Fishman's Neo-D can be had for that price, and I think Duncan's Acoustic Tube, as well. Dean Markley's soundhole pickups have developed a reputation as a good "clamp and go" pickup. The only other thing you could really look for are the stick-on AST-type pickups. DM has their Artist Transducer that is a MEGA cheap stick-on piezo. It actually sounds pretty darn good, too...but it's very prone to feedback. At the other end of the spectrum is Schertler...but you'll be dropping a LOT of cash for one.
Members guitarist21 Posted September 27, 2006 Members Posted September 27, 2006 My Fishman Rare Earth soundhole pickup rocks with my Washburn dread. I think they run about $150 or so, a little over your budget, but man does it sound great. Very natural, accurate reproduction. Ellen
Members Sweb Posted September 28, 2006 Members Posted September 28, 2006 I have an old Shadow stick-on soundboard piezo pick-up. It does have some merits over the soundhole mag types in that it can be stuck on the guitar wherever the sound in the soundboard best suits the equipment and/or particular guitar. The great thing about it is that it can be permanently affixed to the inside of the guitar and hard-wired through a strap-jack once the sweetspot is located. The stick-on putty is inert - or at least hasn't affected the nitro finishes on my guitars - and allows for quick experimentation in locating the best spot on any guitar. The only time I've had feedback problems is when the cord jack was dirty, loose or making direct contact and vibrating against the soundboard, i.e., usual cord issues. But, I've never experienced problems due to the proximity of EMI fields of other equipment because I don't play in that environment.

I paid a hundred for mine.I gotta agree though, great sound. I use the single coil and it does a great job for me plugged direct to the PA. I can also vouch for the Dean Markley Pro-Mag. I have one that is well over twenty years old and works great and sounds good. It's just not a "hot" pickup so you do have to hike the gain on it a bit. I always carry it along in case I have a failure of the Fishman.I think the Pro-Mag can still be had for under fifty bones.

Members guitarcapo Posted September 28, 2006 Members Posted September 28, 2006 Personally I think you can get some great sounds out of soundhole magnetic pickups over under saddle piezo pickups. You juat have to pay attention to your preamp setting and your string brand. Jazz players prefer them to other pickup systems too. My favorite is a Lace pickup.

Usually i play on D'addario 0.13's (medium) which i dont think it will be a problem soundwise....it will be quite responsive... o i forgot i tune them down half a step to D# (Like SRV) that gives me a BIT more bass, with a pickup that is sometimes in the cheaper casses trebely and not very bassy it will give me a good balance in the sound. anyway i decided allmost for sure im going for the Fishman : Fishman Neo-D Magnetic Soundhole Pickup
