I've always found shopping for strings

for my guitar and basses to be a real

hassel. My local music stores seem to be

constantly changing their inventories of

strings. It seems like every time I find a

set of strings that work great for one of

my guitars, the next time I go back to

buy more of the same strings, the store

doesn't carry them any more, or else

they're all sold out. I end up having to

drive all over the place to get the strings

I want, or else buying some strings that

look like they'll be close to what I'm

using, putting them on my guitar, and

finding out they suck.

Well, that's happened one too many

times. I haven't been playing my favorite

acoustic much for the last month and a

half, because my local store was out of

the Martin strings I normally get, so I

bought a set of DR strings, put them on,

and now the guitar sounds dull,

and the strings aren't as comfortable

to play.

I heard about JustStrings.com recently

from a guy on the recording forum. I

finally got frustrated enough to try

them out, and placed my first online

order with them this weekend.

I ordered seven different types of

guitar strings, in various quantities, and

two different sets of bass strings. They

also had a great price on a Planet

Waves hygrometer, so I bought one of

those as well. It eneded up being $133

of stuff. I was particularly happy to see

that they carried Ken Smith Compressor

strings for the bass, which I haven't

been able to find locally for over a

decade. The prices on strings seemed

to be either good or average. From my

perspective, it's more important to get

exactly what I want when I need it, as

opposed to getting the absolute lowest

price.

My order arrived today, which was

pretty fast. Everything I ordered was

in stock, except for a set of Fender

Bullet strings, which they shipped out

today with no extra shipping charges.

I couldn't be happier, I've got enough

strings to keep all of my instruments

going for the next six months.

I tried placing a similar order with

Musician's Friend about two years ago.

Half of the strings I ordered were out

of stock. The strings came in three

separate shipments, so I was billed

for shipping three times. The first

shipment was fast, but the last strings

took over a month to arrive.

I don't know if other people here have

tried JustStrings.com, but if you're

having trouble finding the strings you

want, you should check them out.

I have to agree with your statement that their prices are just average, it would be great if they actually sold them for low prices.

I just recently sent away for some backordered strings along with some other items from MF and I didn't have to pay extra shipping.

juststrings.com is where I shop...when you add in the cost of gas and time spent tracking down the strings I prefer (one example: nobody local carries GHS 3060 Nylon Tapewound bass strings, which I use on both my frettted and fret-less basses), their prices don't seem too high at all!

And where else would I find strings for my "oddball" instruments (mandocello, laud, balalaika, etc.) ? :)

I've used them several times, though not exclusively. Apart from one mix up (they sent the wrong type of Martin strings) things went rather well, so long as you're not in a hurry, that is. Generally it took them 5 days to get my order to my door.

The prices are certainly the biggest selling point, but if I happen to see the same brand at one of my favorite local stores I have no problem paying a little extra for the convenience factor. It kind of helps me to justify spending time playing the guitars they have there.

I may have to find a new place. I suspect that MF may stop carrying Elixirs like their sister company Guitar Center. First they had a huge sale and blew them out for $6.99 a set with free shipping and since then (3-4 weeks) they've been on "backorder"
