Members PJMPirate Posted October 10, 2006 Members Posted October 10, 2006 Howdy, everyone. I'm playing in a talent show run by my college next month, and I'm looking for a pretty upbeat song, that will get the crowd rockin and that I can play solo. Preferably nothing too difficult... thanks a lot!
Members scottop1972 Posted October 10, 2006 Members Posted October 10, 2006 supertramp --- give a little bit!peter gabriel in your eyesoasis- wonderwallthere's plenty!
Members guitarist21 Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Anything by Jack Johnson or John Mayer for the college crowd- I'm thinking Banana Pancakes (Johnson) or 83 (Mayer).
Members kwakatak Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Stairway to Heaven! Seriously. It takes talent to make such an overplayed and cliched song your own. It also takes skill to pull off the building crescendo (from sole fingerpicked acoustic to the "wall of guitars") while singing at a higher than normal pitch the entire time. I used to be able to do it, but it's been years and I'm afraid I'd hurt myself nowadays. Either that or the audience would!

Members ihateyouguys Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 sublime - what I got. Pretty much two chords and a chorus any drunk can sing along with.
Members PJMPirate Posted October 11, 2006 Author Members Posted October 11, 2006 thanks for the suggestions, everyone!
Members Elderling Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Don't listen to them. Go to Youtube and look up Alive With the Glory of Love--the acoustic MTV version. That's what you want. What are you waiting for? Do it. Now!

Are you talking about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39v-l1p2l4U Cool tune, but the guy makes John Mayer's guitar face look mild. That Taylor guitar sounds great {looks over shoulder}.

I like his live cover better than the original, although he has done at least one other comparatively overproduced recording that doesn't do it for me. Amazing voice on this guy. +1 for this song. Translates well into single-performer acoustic stuff.
Members JasmineTea Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Keep On The Sunny Side? Something by Paul Robeson? Theme from Bridge On The River Kwai?
Members Michael Martin Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 (for real): Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face" (in jest, partly): The Who, "Mary Ann with the Shaky Hands"
Members Sweb Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Theme from Bridge On The River Kwai? Complete with bigger than life size cardboard likeness of Alec Guiness in costume center-stage and the NY Rockettes whistling the theme in time with their leg kick routine behind.Genius. Pure genius. You are the visionary.I thought Cash's Boy Named Sue was a good idea. I have been trumped.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 well... do you want to display your talent? (a la talent show) or do you want to be the man to your friends (a la drunken open mic performance) i think thats the question... If you're going the second route, it really doesn't matter what you play... something people know... its more important that you just sell it, people who like you will still like you and you'll have a story... showing your talent? well, thats a different question...

Members Cldplytkmn Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 in a true talent show your first concern wouldn't be to "get the crowd rockin"
Members valleyguy Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Back in the High Life by Steve Winwood. Easy three chords, upbeat, and everyone likes it
Members PJMPirate Posted October 11, 2006 Author Members Posted October 11, 2006 As for the showing your talent thing - well, I'm not that talented, to be perfectly honest. I want a song that I'll enjoy playing and that everyone else'll enjoy listening to.

Members Sweb Posted October 11, 2006 Members Posted October 11, 2006 Folk Rock Jazz Blues Country Bluegrass New Acoustic (read it on Webber's site, whatever it is) Indy Everybody here knows something about everything, or visa versa so what'll it be?
Members PJMPirate Posted October 12, 2006 Author Members Posted October 12, 2006 As for the stuff I like, well, classic rock, blues, southern rock, occasionally country (the rock side.) My big priority is either something that sounds fine as an instrumental or something that's pretty easy to play if I'm gonna sing it. I've only been playing about a year and a half, but I think if I pick a song now I can practice hard and be ready for the show in mid-november. It's not exactly a talent show, to be honest - it's a "Mr. USA"-type fundraiser thing - you know, answer questions, show a talent, etc. (The things I'll do for my friends.) Anyway, I'm not looking to blow people away or anything like that... just something fun and preferably not to hard. Thanks to everyone for helping out, by the way! PS. If you can think of a good electric song, I'm just as comfortable on electric, so don't hesitate to shout out. Actually, I was thinking about doing a short version of "Black Magic Woman" or "Oye Como Va" - just cut out most of the parts where he's just playing chords and make it an instrumental. Thanks again!
