Members dave sabre Posted October 17, 2006 Members Posted October 17, 2006 My machineheads (tuners) finally gave up the ghost (well, 2 of them) and I am looking for replacements, where I don't have to make any destructive modifications to the guitar. Obviously, everyone has their favorite brands of tuners, but I am looking to pick up a set of 3x3, for whatever it might cost, and whatever brand I need to get. The mounting holes for my machineheads are this kind of arrangement; So does anyone know who makes good, solid, even nice looking ones? Kluson? Grover? Schaller? Gotoh? Any links to suitable replacements would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to redrill.
Members dave sabre Posted October 17, 2006 Author Members Posted October 17, 2006 Should have said - I am looking for sealed, closed back tuners, not like the one pictured.
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 17, 2006 Members Posted October 17, 2006 StewMac has tuners to fit almost every price range (and hole pattern). Each one has a tab that says "specs" - it will show you all the critical dimensions. The least important in my mind is the mounting holes - you can always drill new ones, but post size, bushings, post length etc will really determine what will work. Some tuners have smaller nuts on the top and will leave "racoon eyes" around the posts - that is objectional to some people. I've replaced the Grovers Rotomtics on my D-18 with Gotohs, and have Grover Sta-tites on a couple of others. I just couldn't justify the price of Waverlies. btw - I have the old Martin Rotomatics if they would work. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners.html
Members dave sabre Posted October 17, 2006 Author Members Posted October 17, 2006 these might do, but I was more than prepared to spend a little extra to get something nicer looking, if one of the major companies made these designs. I have only ever seen 3rd party 'budget' options.

Members dave sabre Posted October 19, 2006 Author Members Posted October 19, 2006 no, the ones I have are sealed tuners. Its a folk guitar from the 70s. Basically an ibanez MIJ lawsuit copy of a gibson hummingbird (a concord). I love it to death, and would spend virtually anything to have it back playing again, which was why i was asking if any of the big tuner companies made good quality replacement parts. I could redrill, but even though its not pre war martin vintage, its vintage to me, and I would like to keep it as original as I can.
Members JasmineTea Posted October 19, 2006 Members Posted October 19, 2006 My fix would only work for open back tuners like the one pictured. But here's another link to a parts supply house.LMI
Members AK47 Posted October 19, 2006 Members Posted October 19, 2006 Check [www.elderly.com] Elderly Music keeps a nice supply of replacement tuners.
