Members pro_magnum Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 Is putting electric strings on an acoustic guitar the best thing to do? i have done that when the music store didn't have acoustic strings. Is it good for the guitar?
Members recordingtrack1 Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 Won't hurt it if that is what you mean, but why do it, except for emergencies like you noted above. RT:)
Members guitarist21 Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 In emergencies (ie a string breaks at a show and I must change it and all I have is electrics) I've certainly put my fair share of electric strings on acoustics. But electric strings tend to sound kind of dead on an acoustic guitar, so I change them as soon as I get the chance to. Ellen
Members DonK Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 I don't think I want to visit a music store that doesn't have ANY acoustic strings. That's a pretty basic inventory item. Anyway, electric strings aren't going to hurt they guitar, though they might hurt your ears.

Members KATMAN Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 I've never done it,but I would imagine it would be like putting on extra light acoustic strings, just a lot brighter and thinner.
Members pro_magnum Posted October 21, 2006 Author Members Posted October 21, 2006 no i found those to give it a more bass-y sound. this was a while ago, so i forgot what kind they were.

Members daklander Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 Um, why not have an extra set of acoustic strings laying around? Any music store that runs out of strings, electric or acoustis isn't worth going back to. Change stores. I mean, if you're running Martin or d'Addario strings and the store happens to be out of that particular set use a different set or use a different brand. If the freaking store only carries one brand of acoustic strings, see above. Change stores. [edit] There is, IMHO, absolutely no excuse for putting an electric string on an acoustic guitar. If you are on a gig you had better have an extra set of strings along, or an extra guitar. If you're at home there is no reason you'd have an extra electric set and not an extra acoustic set.[/edit]
Members jjang1993 Posted October 22, 2006 Members Posted October 22, 2006 hmmm, i remember someone saying "back then(idk what he meant by that)" that bronze strings werent invented and people had to use nickel strings. are there any recordings of an artist using nickel strings on an acoustic?

I once went to my local KFC and they had no CHICKEN!!! Of all things for a Kentucky Fried CHICKEN to run out of, it was CHICKEN!On Topic - I have done this once and changed them almost as quick as I put them on. Didn't like what it did to my tone!
