Help me pick a Larrivee from the 03 series...which model?

At this point I already know I want the L-03 model...I will use it primarly for recording, and also at home.

I found a store that has all the wood combinations I know of available...so here are the choices:

L-03 (Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides)

L-03R (Spruce top, Rosewood back and sides)

L-03MT (Mahogany top, back and sides)

I've seen the Mahogany top, recommended in some threads here, but out of the 3...Which one would you pick and why? Keeping in mind that you will use it mostly at the studio, for strummed pop music most of the time.

I forgot something very important, there aren't any stores here where I live that I could go to, to see which one I like. They just sell the basic stuff.

Thanks!

I'd have to second the L-03.

I like my OM-03R for recording (I play mainly fingerstyle on it) but for some reason I think the L-03R is too "muddy" (because it has a little more bass + overtones). The regular L-03 lacks the overtones and has better individual note definition (fundamental) so it sounds a bit warmer and less metallic. As far as technique goes, I think the L body is more versatile than the OM. Both are great for fingerstyle, but strumming sounds much fuller on the L.

I've never tried a L-03MT but from what I hear they have a quicker decay than spruce tops. As a result many folks don't think of them as "multi-purpose" guitars and instead prefer them for specialized uses like playing blues/folk fingerstyle.

I'd get either the L-03 or L-03MT.

I recently got a 'hog top Guild, and love it. It doesn't have the sweetness of a spruce-topped guitar, but it makes up for it in warmth and depth. It just sounds more "three dimensional" to me because of the added clarity in midrange emphasis.

Play 'em all, and then have someone at the store play them for you. Walk around a little, close your eyes, and just listen. Your own ears will tell you what to buy.

+1. I read this and thought, "Yeah, why the hell don't I own an L-03??"

i've got an L-05MT which is pretty similar to the 03MT... mine is really versatile, i don't feel confined by the hog top at all... I'd recommend the MT... YMMV...

Spruce/Mahogany for recording. I agree with Kwak about R/W muddiness. My Mahogany records much better than my R/W. I also have the 3rd combo I've yet to record but judging from its sound I'd still go with the 1st choice for recording.

Otherwise, they all sound great.

Yeah, I often think that an L-03 would make a nice compliment to my OM-03R. Especially since they're going to stop using mahogany soon...

... of course, one of those (discontinued) OM-03MTs would also be nice... :^/

... then again I've always said that a Martin HD-35 would be something to shoot for one day...

... or a Taylor GS...

... or even a Breedlove Atlas for a quick cheap fix...!!! :freak:

Now that you mentioned the Breedlove Atlas, yesterday I played one that a cousin of a friend of mine has, and wasn't at all too impressed with its sound or feel, it had Spruce top and Rosewood back and sides...maybe I was expecting too much because of its price tag.

I thought it lacked volume, and midrange. Or maybe I just don't like rosewood sound. So I guess that leaves me with the L-03 and the L-03MT...

Thanks for your replys...
