Members Roy Posted October 26, 2006 Members Posted October 26, 2006 Howdy - After 4 weeks, I finally received my two guitars from Germany. I already posted my "New Guitar" thread so I won't include photos again, but original thread is here. http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1385355&highlight=prewar Anyway, I'm pretty darn happy, but as expected, the 100 year old is going to need work. I figure it's off to a luthier for a neck reset. Does anyone know a good one in my area or is there a url that might help? Thanks in advance for any leads.
Members daklander Posted October 27, 2006 Members Posted October 27, 2006 I don't know anything about these guys but check out...Barkwood GuitarsJohn Wescott Guitar RepairLacey Guitars If you don't get any other responses from guys who have used someone in LA, contact Buffalo Bros in Carlsbad, or McCabes in Santa Monica. Both have good reputations.
Members utterhack Posted October 27, 2006 Members Posted October 27, 2006 For acoustics, McCabe's is the place. If they can't do ya right they'll point you to who can.
Members Roy Posted October 27, 2006 Author Members Posted October 27, 2006 McCabe's it is. Thanks guys.
Members valleyguy Posted October 27, 2006 Members Posted October 27, 2006 McCabe's is certainly fine. Also, there is Neely's in Hollywood, and in the valley north of L.A there is Renson guitar shop and California vintage guitar and amp, both in Sherman oaks/Studio City.
Members Roy Posted October 28, 2006 Author Members Posted October 28, 2006 Thanks V-Guy. Actually, I'm in Burbank but I think I'll do the trip to McCabe's anyway. Never been there before and there's a few things I'd like to play.
Members Roy Posted October 30, 2006 Author Members Posted October 30, 2006 Well, struck out at McCabe's. They don't do neck resets and THE guy who does is up to his ass in old Martins and Gibsons. They also said a neck reset costs about $900 (Cough!). I was given some alternates to try, but it looks like I'll be giving Neely and Renson a call afterall. Might even consider shipping it to somebody or sadly, might have to bail on it which would be a shame. It sounds great and the scalloped neck is like butter.
