Members RizinRico Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 looking to buy something smaller than my current dred. would like to spend $1,000 +/-. I do more flatpicking than fingerpicking. any help would be appreciated and I am open to anything from solid wood to carbon fiber. Rico
Members Hudman Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 I would look at a Larrivee OM-5. You should be able to pick one up for apprx. $1100. You can pick up an OM-3 for apprx. $800. They are the same guitar construction wise. The OM-5 has better cosmetics.
Members pipedwho Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 Have you considered thinline type guitars that are designed to be plugged in (eg. Taylor T5, Anderson Crowdster)? Or are you thinking of something like an OM sized guitar that still works well unplugged?
Members RizinRico Posted November 5, 2006 Author Members Posted November 5, 2006 I am not too concerned about plugging it in at this point as I am not considering playing professionally or in a large room but wouldnt drop an interesting instrument from the short list unless the electronics sucked. for example the alvarez electronics seems to make everyone shake their virtual heads in this forum so I would really be careful to play a plugged in alvarez against a lot of other better regarded systems. looking to the future tho my wife plays celtic harp and we have worked on a few tunes together so looking ahead 2 or 3 years we might be playing for pennies. so a nice loud and well balanced box could be equiped with a fishman system (or another GAS attack) could take care of that prob. archtops have always intrigued me. i do like a little bling on my box so the OM5 will get a longer look Hud but I will keep repeating TONE is EVERYTHING while I play thru a few.

A great OM for flatpicking is the Epi Masterbilt EF-500R. That's a big part of the reason I bought mine. Ellen
Members Rada Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 I'd recommend the Larrivee L series rather than the OM if you're more of a flatpicker
Members Freeman Keller Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 In my humble opinion, an OM, or the roughly equivalent GC, is the best sized guitar to "do anything". From there you have a wonderful selection of woods and manufacturers to choose from. From your sig you are in NYC - get out and try everything you can. btw - my personal favorate, the OM-21, is a bit out of your price but you might be able to find a used one. At least try it if you can.
