Members Dave W. Posted November 6, 2006 Members Posted November 6, 2006 A friend of mine and I would like to start playing together. Neither one of us can sing a note, so I would like to find some duets that we could play together. It would be helpful to have tab and some type of recording available. Anybody have any suggertions? Thanks.
Members Freeman Keller Posted November 6, 2006 Members Posted November 6, 2006 Stefan Grossman used to do some great duets with people like Duck Baker and John Renborn. You might browse his his site for some of his stuff. I don't play with others very often (or as my grade school report card said, very well), and since I'm a fingerstyle player I have the same problems. I find that when I'm doing the rythym part I just do boom-chucks with my thumb and three fingers, and when I do the solos I leave a lot of the thumb bass out. One kind of music that seems to work pretty well for this is old blues - one player can do the basic first position stuff in the key of E or A, while the other noodles around up the neck. I really like this with a bottleneck. A really cool trio is Leo, Doc and Chet jammin' on the Home and Away dvd - worth the price alone.
Members Sweb Posted November 6, 2006 Members Posted November 6, 2006 One picks a key and runs a fingerstyle rythm through the circle of 5ths while the other plays off of that. That's one of the little exercises the thumbpickers did back in Kentucky. It progresses from there as you become more acquainted with each other's playing styles but in the meantime it's a good place to start.
Members mmcquain Posted November 7, 2006 Members Posted November 7, 2006 I got 4 words for you: Chet Atkins Jerry Reed Look at some of their videos on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. There are several books (Mel Bay, Hal Lenoard, etc.) with several of their instrumentals in them... good luck! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKH5cH2X_3Y
