Members Havar2 Posted November 13, 2006 Members Posted November 13, 2006 Hello everyone... I was on here before but my account was messed up a while back. Anyways, its time for a new acoustic... the one I had that was passed down to me has broken. I never thought it would happen, and I done have much experience with acoustics other than that one (an old washburn), so its hard for me to know what to look for. I really like the Martin 16 Series but theyre a bit too expensive. Have any of you played a breedlove? Im mainly interested in the AC25/SR Plus and the AD25/SR Plus I like the AC25 better, based on looks (I have never liked tortoise pickguards on acoustics) and size (it looks thinner... I play mainly electric, my les paul, so it would be easier to get used to), but I dont know how they compare tonewise. Its a while away but Ill probably go to GC next week sometime. Im not too fluent in acoustic speak, so can someone fill me in on the difference between a concert and dreadnought body shape? Thanks. Sorry if this is nooby, Im not much of an acoustic guy, so you guys will be helping me alot in knowing what to look for.
Members AK47 Posted November 13, 2006 Members Posted November 13, 2006 I've never owned a Breedlove but they have a good rep. I've played a few in music stores and were impressed with how well they played and sounded. The dred is larger in size than the concert and tends to be boomier and more bassy. great for strumming but still sounds good fingerstyle. The concert being smaller tends to have a more balanced tone and great for fingerstyle but also can sound good strumming. The volume isn't much different. Sitting down the concert size tends to be more comfortable. Mostly it depends on your style of music and your ear what will work best for you.IMHO Breedlove is worth checking out. If you go to GC at a time when the electric hacks aren't making racket take them out of the acoustic room to try them. This will get you more a sound of the guitar and less the sound of the room.
Members Sweb Posted November 13, 2006 Members Posted November 13, 2006 Typically, if you are looking for a boomier sound then the AD will provide that over the AC. The AD is the larger soundbox. The AC, and other concert-size guitars, are more conducive to playing fingerstyle. They are designed to have less bass "boom" and are therefore more balanced acrossed the tonal range. Also, typical fretboard width on dreads (AD) is 1-11/16 inches while concerts (AC) are usually 1-3/4 inches - a little wider - and correspondingly the string spacing at the bridge is also wider in separation. Lastly, as with Martin, the string height from the fretboard is known to be higher on dreads than concerts. The thinking is that fingerstylists play lightly all over the fretboard and aren't attacking the strings in a manner that a flatpick can. Aggressive flatpick string-snapping styles can cause fretting-out (buzzing) and the higher action prevents this. I have no experience with Breedlove guitars and all of the above is loosely conventional. You need to play each guitar and match it to your style of playing.
Members RKO Posted November 13, 2006 Members Posted November 13, 2006 I have the AD20. It's an amazing guitar for the price. I bought mine about 3 years ago, looking for the best sound I could find for approx 600$ or so. I found it.Bright uppers, clear mids, booming bass. Sounds great across the entire register to my untrained ears.get one, you won't be disappointed.
Members Havar2 Posted November 13, 2006 Author Members Posted November 13, 2006 Thanks alot for the help guys, I appreciate it! Looks like Im leaning toward the AC, but only playing them will tell.
Members ptmurphy Posted November 13, 2006 Members Posted November 13, 2006 I have had both and like the AD25SR Plus much better than the AC. Both are great guitars, I just like a good bottom end so the AD fit my tastes a lot better. This is the best guitar I could find for $1,000 t my ear.

If it's coming down a to a few 100 bucks, save for it, you will never be disappointed you bought a Martin the first time around, no to mention the way better resale value. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-D16RGT-Dreadnought-Guitar?sku=516747
Members kwakatak Posted November 14, 2006 Members Posted November 14, 2006 Looks are one thing but I'd be inclined to go with the dread if you're just going to use it to strum or play solo. Concerts are nice for intricate fretwork but their tone is more focused on the midrange making them less full-sounding. BTW, I played a AD25/SR Plus last month (mostly strumming) and it sounded very nice to my ear. I'd put it up against a Taylor or Martin in that price range.
Members Havar2 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Members Posted November 14, 2006 Thanks, I actually went to the local mom and pop store today and compared a concert and dread, and the dread did sound much fuller. Now I have to choose between a Breedlove AD25/SR and whatever Martins I can find. I played a Martin 00016, not sure what model, a long time ago and thats pretty much what Im looking for. It had nice electronics, too. This looks nice, as well. Can anyone recommend a nice acoustic-electric dread that is suitable for both strumming and finger-picking thats similar to Martin/Breedlove (or just one of their models) for under 1700? Theres just too many
Members kwakatak Posted November 14, 2006 Members Posted November 14, 2006 I probably sound like a broken record but for strumming and fingerstyle I was really impressed with the Larriv
Members Havar2 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Members Posted November 14, 2006 That is actually REALLY nice. Its showing the list price as $1,799 for that one, but Elderly sent me the quote thats a bit different. I might have to jump on this! It has so many great features.. It has the L.R. Baggs system that Ive heard so many people raving about, and an ebony fingerboard (my favorite). Thanks alot, that thing is smoking! I wish I could try one that hasn't been touched by a million people out, the only dealer near me is Sam Ash. Elderyly has a good return policy, right? I might just have to order one...
Members kwakatak Posted November 14, 2006 Members Posted November 14, 2006 Yeah, the LV-03RE is a pretty versatile guitar IMO. Larriv
Members gt5litre Posted November 14, 2006 Members Posted November 14, 2006 I really like the Breedlove Vintage/Traditional series. The mahogany really had great note bloom and really reojected and cut. Probably the best sounding guitar I have ever played. better than my Martin D-18 Authentic or D-18V. gt5litre
