000-18 explosion

OK, so it didn't explode. The Elixir Nanowebs didn't do much for it though. I'm underwhelmed in general with my guitar right now, the low profile is cramping my big hands and the hog tone is leaving me wanting more...so I pick up my OM-21 and I'm ok for a while. I'll get back to the 000 in good time, I think that she just needs a little vacation. And then I'll write some 12 bar blues for her to play.

this is why i need a rosewood guitar... for those rare days that hog doesn't do it for me... its hard not to be disappointed, but i think guitars have off days just like players do.

Generally speaking, hog isn't for general play. I've come to that conclusion. Also, it doesn't want to be played aggressively. Save it for the more delicate touch in you. Both the hog guitars I have speak louder and more articulately with a lighter touch - less is more - where other woods seem to be less sensitive to finesse.

"A quiver" or "to quiver "?

I thought a quiver is for holding arrows. You'll pardon my thickness today Freeman but just what is the connection? I won't be embarrassed if I miss simple logic in public. It's my trademark.

as in a bunch of arrows. For some reason skiers feel that you need different skis for different conditions - hardpack, groom, and (yeah, baby) Pow-Pow. When people point to all my skis I tell them that is a "quiver". I just carried the term over to my collection of little wooden boxes in the music room,

Maybe golfers have a better term for all those little sticks - seems like just one ought to be enough

wait for it... a tie in... "its not the arrow, its the indian" alot of truth in that one too... "technique is but one arrow in your quiver"... heard that one too.

Lets all talk to my wife and we'll see if I can't get another guitar out of all of this. I still want a 00-18V, the low profile on the 000 is actually a pain in the hand for me.

Ummm, I meant nut width I guess, the OM is 1 3/4 and the 000 is 1 11/16. The neck on the OM feels much beefier to me.

As always. I already have an e-bay ad written up ready to go if I decide to get rid of it. It's a sickness.

I just took my OM-21 custom cutaway in today for modification from my Martin Authorized luthier.

He's great.

My frets were worn down so bad that they need to be redone, this after only two years of ownership. Ughhh, they were so chunky from note bending.

But I have always been drooling for some nice inlay work on the fingerboard, sort of like an OM-42, with a little bit of notched squares, diamonds, and cat's eyes with a center notched square. (This guitar is beautiful since it has some BWB boltaron top inlay in addition to the tortise binding, and I've always felt it could hold more weight in terms of fingerboard inlay.)

But he reminded me of the ski jump that was ruining my action, keeping it at 4/32s of an inch at the twelvth fret since any lower and I'd start to get some buzz at the 17th fret and up.

Then he tugged at the neck to inspect the dove tail joint, holding the guitar up to a bright light looking at it sideways. He looked at me and said, "The dove tail is loose." I asked if that sort of thing was covered under warranty, and he said, "Yup!" (Like I said, he's great!)

So we went over a few other details and I'm getting:

Fretboard radiusing, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 inch graduating up the board to help me with my barring on the low frets, and extensive note bending on the upper frets

New frets on the whole thing

5th fret notched diamond

7th fret dual notched squares

9th fret notched diamond

12th fret cat's eyes and notched square combo

15th fret cat's eye

17th fret cat's eye

This is all possible with the old fingerboard because the OM-21 has only 1/8th inch dots which he can work over with the new inlays. I was able to look at examples he had, and he used his caliper to insure things would work right.

Dovetail rework to get rid of ski jump.

A higher bone saddle since I won't need the extremely low one I currently have once the ski jump is solved.

New strings and set up.

We spent an hour and a half working this up!

Two weeks, $450. I can't wait!

(It'll look great, play like a dream, and since it is already two years opened up and settled in, it will sound great and remain stable until next year when I'll need new frets again. Did I forget to mention still no dings, just a lot of fingernail scratches which I love!)

"get rid of"? What's this "get rid of crap"? It's "dear, we need a bigger music room". When my son visited last his comment was "you have more cases than I do". I mean, like this guy is just collecting slots

Good point FK, I can always get more. I just keep on spending the same money over and over again, I sell then buy and on and on. I've never actually lost any money on the deals, I broke even with the 000-17S to Sweb, and now I'm fully vested in this 000. So I guess it's time to sit back and save up again.

Shouldn't take long. Chinup, pip pip and cheer-o.

Even though I keep distressing about dreads bulging beyond my comfort zone, I'm thinking real hard on that Blueridge Focus.

I need a bigger music room myself w/ a new little girl a couple months away, you all know that story. Losing a room gaining a kid. No prob here, just need to move into another place.... maybe with a den or basement......

Whoa. Anyone know what models the second and third guitars are here? Especially that burst in the center. What is the designation for parlor size? Isn't that what those 2 are?

MAN those are sweet. Love those slots...

Those first two look like custom Martin '00' size, sort of their parlor, the burst I believe is the 00-18H Geoff Muldaur, but I may be wrong. then you've got the 000-15s and the...could it be an HD28LSV?

Just go lurk at the UMGF for a while, or join even. You'll find out.

Those guys LOVE their Martins. Go to their Guitar Gallery and drool a while. Some of the customs they have posted are TO DIE FOR.

While searching around for the right sound for me, like everyone else does for themselves, I picked up a couple slothead smaller bodied guitars. Since then I have continued the "search" and through a whole lot of A/B'ing I think I'm going back to larger body guitars - OMs in particular. Love the slothead look but a great sounding guitar is what it is, in the end, slothead or not. The smaller body guitars have a smaller sound and I'm thinking that isn't the way I want to go.
