Members Hudman Posted November 28, 2006 Members Posted November 28, 2006 I'm turning into the electric guitar version of Whalebot! I have come full circle on my electric guitar journey. Back with a Strat. I bought a used Schecter and a new Squier '51 during late October / early November. I ended up falling in love with a Olympic White Jimmie Vaughan Strat on Ebay. My GAS attack struck hard during a weak moment late at night. I made the decision to sell the Schecter and Squier. See, I owned a JV Strat before and I resented selling it. There is something special about the 1950's V neck and the Tex-Mex pickups. Here's my post from the electric guitar forum: I bought a used, 2006 Fender Jimmie Vaughan Strat on Ebay last week. UPS dropped it off late this afternoon. I pulled it out of the shipping box about an hour ago. It is dent and ding free. There are light pick marks on the pickguard, otherwise it would look brand new. i am very impressed with the condition of the guitar. I bought several used guitars on Ebay over the past 2 years. This is the best of the bunch. It's nice dealing with an honest seller. I need to put a set of 10's on it and check the setup and intonation before I can measure the mojo factor. That will have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry about the dark photos.

All I got is a little Vox AD15VT......{hangs head in shame}.... Honestly, it does a nice job of pretending to be a Fender tube amp. Best part? I can use head phones or line direct into my laptop for recording. It's also nice and small. The wife told me I can no longer have big, loud amps unless I join a band. Hey, I got to listen to her right now. She's pregnant. It would be dangerous for me to cross her. On a side note: My 10 year old daughter's band teacher is a serious blues guy. I made that discovery yesterday. I think we might get together for a little jam session soon. It could lead to a band situation.....{surf's music sites to look at tube amps}

Check it out: Factory 2nd Epiphone Masterbilt DR-500R - $449.00 Used 2006 Fender Jimmie Vaughan Strat - $450.00 Scratch & Dent Factory 2nd Vox AD15VT Amp - $100.00 I have $999.00 in Ebay guitar gear. I would love to replace my Vox with a tweed Blues Junior like this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Blonde-Blues-Junior-Guitar-Amp?sku=480491
Members zb0430 Posted November 28, 2006 Members Posted November 28, 2006 Good, Lord, you got a good deal there... The Clapton Strat I got was a gift, else that JV was looking very very tempting... I agree that the vintage soft V is the most comfortable choice. Plays like butter. I will say that I'm not personally a huge fan of the super clean and white looking maple on my strat, I prefer that vintage toner kind of look. Guess I'll just have to wait and play the crap out of it and "relic" it myself, the natural way... PS I have a black Blues Junior... Highly recommended. That's a great amp, and it gets deceivingly loud for its size. You can get it new for about $350, or used in the $200's, if I'm not mistaken... Worth it, IMHO.

I feel like I got a heck of a good deal. There isn't a single scratch, ding or dent on the body, fretboard, neck or headstock. There is some light pick scratches on the pickguard. It's in better condition than 90% of the guitars hanging on the wall at Guitar Center. I don't think the guy played it much (he bought it new in May, 2006 for $599.00). He only charged me $14.00 for shipping. Awesome seller. I plan to give it a full setup and pickup adjustment later tonight (pickups are all at the same height and level). I'm getting some fret buzz (hey, I guess I'm heavy handed from too much acoustic guitar - ). Luckily, I do my own work. I love the Blues Junior amp. I had one of those too. Guess what I did with it? Sold it on Ebay. That was my second worst guitar gear mistake. Here's a picture of my old JV Strat and Blues Junior (I like the olympic white better):

I rarely introduce "new money" into my guitar habit. The wife does a lot of eye rolling when she sees me taking pictures of gear and boxing it up. She also thinks it's strange that I'm becoming good friends with the UPS guy (he plays guitar too - thanks to me, he's selling and buying gear on Ebay - ). The UPS guy (Mike) bull{censored}s with me for 5 to 10 minutes everytime he drops something off. I plan to keep my Masterbilt and this Strat. I am very happy with both. The fact that this is my second JV Strat is proof enough for me.
Members Hudman Posted November 28, 2006 Author Members Posted November 28, 2006 Here's an interesting tidbit I just realized: I got an olympic white Strat delivered on Jimi Hendrix's birthday (Nov. 27, 1942) How cool is that?

I love my '98 (or is it a '99?) American Standard Strat but it looks like I paid waaaay too much for it. It doesn't matter to me because as far as I'm concerned it's a keeper because I love the ash body and clear finish. The "standard" 1.65" neck and stock pickups OTOH I'm not in so much in love with. As for the amp, with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe maybe I have too much and paid too much for it as well, but after a few years collecting dust it's starting to get some use at church. Come to think of it, I don't get electric guitar GAS so much as I get EG component GAS. I often wonder how expensive it would be to "pimp" (or better yet, "Tex Mex") my Standard Strat? I'm thinking a set of Texas Specials ($150), a MOP scratchguard ($50) and maybe a neck off a JV Strat ($???) Think I'm crazy?

It became a dust collector after I bought my first JV Strat. Upgrading Strats is big business. The cool thing is you can get back a lot of your money by selling your old pickups, pickguard and neck. American Standard pickups sell for $15.00 - $25.00 each. You could get $10.00 for your pickguard and $150.00 + for your neck. Check the Ebay completed listings. You may be surprised.
Members kwakatak Posted November 28, 2006 Members Posted November 28, 2006 Thanks, Hud! Just to satisfy my curiosity I checked for JV Strat necks on ebay and only found 2. One was up to $340 after only 3 bids! BTW - they were both with maple fretboards. Do they come in rosewood?

No. Just maple. Strats are worth more parted out. There is a guy on Ebay that buys new Strats, takes them apart and sells the parts. His Ebay store is called the Stratosphere. I bought a new Deluxe Fender gig bag from him for $10.50 + $11.00 shipping. MF sells the same bag for $59.99.

I've never had much experience with electrics in general, but only maple in the few strats and teles I've played. I've always heard rosewood felt a little "slower" and wasn't as crisp of a tone... Thoughts?
Members mmb Posted November 29, 2006 Members Posted November 29, 2006 Playing buddy of mine has that exact guitar, same color, 2004 model. Feels great, plays great. I've been looking around for one myself. You got a good deal.

I couldn't comment on the tone because it was a Korean-made HH-configured Strat clone (with rusty coils) and at the time I had a crappy little 2 watt amp. All I know is that my fingers used to sweat something awful back then and my fingertips would always get hung up on the gloss finish and I couldn't do slides very easily, so it's more of a texture thing. I have a similar aversion to gloss acoustic guitars. OTOH, rosewood and ebony fretboards seem to feel more natural. BTW, I guess that may be another reason why I prefer acoustic guitars. I don't even mind them getting gunked up because that just means they will be getting a cleaning. Once a year I'll oil 'em up so they're nice and slick! As for tone, I actually don't like an inherently "crisp" tone. I prefer to rely on different types of strings for that so that if my tone becomes "muddy" I know it's just time to swap 'em for a fresh set.
