Hey all. I'm new here... but in the market for a new acoustic electric (on a budget - less than $400, $300 would be great).

So I've discovered the line of Samick guitars. These seem like a great value, since you can get a solid spruce top acoustic electric for under $300. Anyone have experience with these guitars?

Particularly I'm looking at the DC5e and the DC7e. DC7e is prettier and more expensive, both have solid tops...

I'd rate myself at intermediate as far as skill goes. I'm still learning a lot, but I've been playing for over a year.

Can't say I've had a lot of experience with the Samick acoustics, but I can say that their electrics kick butt. So if they build their acoustics with the same attention to detail that goes into their electrics, they're probably alright guitars. Samick has a reputation for being a lot of guitar in very little money.

The music store where I teach carries Samick acoustics and electrics. As it has already been said, they are good guitars for the money. I recommend them to potential students who come into the store and ask for my opinion. There's a particular model...the D3?? I think, that's an incredible sounding guitar for the price.

I would recommend playing some Samicks as well as some other guitars and compare. Every guitar is different and every guitarist has that certain "something" they are looking for in their next instrument. Happy hunting!

One more thing...the people on this forum are generally very helpful and will give very informed opiniions but as others have recommended, ya gotta go play them. Go to as many dealers as possible and play as many guitars in your price range as possible then make your choice.

I just bought a Samick SJ14 the other day! I am not a very experienced player but I played a lot of guitars in the last couple months and from my perspective this was the one I kept coming back to. I loved the sound and the look. This one happens to be solid cedar top in a "southern jumbo" shape that really appealed to me. After all, that is part of it.

I also played the D5 and thought it played and sounded just as nice, a little different but nice. If they didnt have that sj in the shop I would have bought the D5 (solid spruce top). Believe it or not, even the D2 with the laminate top was very easy playing and sounded pretty good.

So, like the others have said, very nice for the money.

This is what I got:

As many others have mentioned, Samick builds for many name-brand companies as well as producing under their own name. Several years ago a Samick rep told me that they produced more guitars each year than all other manufacturers combined--at the time it was a believable claim.

About three-four years ago (maybe a little longer?), Greg Bennett came on board and began a catalog-wide overhaul of Samick's own offerings. Prior to his arrival, their Samick branded products were unremarkable, about the quality level of Squire. They did have a better qualitty line dubbed "Artist Series" that were about the equivalent of Epiphone at the time. (I had a Samick Artist Series jazz box that was virtually identical to a Casino.) Since Bennett came, things have improved tremendously. The first guitars to get the Bennett treatment were the strat-style electrics. During this phase, the acoustics were still clunky. In the last couple of years the acoustics seem to have been upgraded. Moral of the story: newer Samicks are better. Watch out when buying in the used market because the older ones just don't compare.
