Members Cripes Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 Well folks. I gave them an honest try. I think their tone is fine. But, I just keep slipping off the bass strings. Hard dry callouses and slick strings - and perhaps my style - don't work together. That brings up another point. Do you folks who don't have pronounced callouses normally use Elixirs? Conclusion to be drawn later.

Giving them an honest try is definitely a... noble thing to do. I don't really like the tone so much; for some reason, they don't sound as robust as the Martin SPs I use. But that's just IMO. I commend you for giving them an honest try. Ellen
Members kwakatak Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 I've never had a problem with such string slippage. FWIW, I don't have pronounced callouses and try to use as little effort as necessary.
Members AK47 Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 I'm a convert. I used nanos' for years. They had acceptable tone and lasted a long time. One day the tone just wasn't acceptable anymore. An unacceptable tone that lasts a long time was an easy choice. I took off the Elixir and never looked back.
Members recordingtrack1 Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 Hi AK, I'm just on the other side of that street going in exactly the opposite direction. I love the tone and they do last a long time. I've yet to find another string that I consider to sound as good. I like Martin PB's but they last me only a couple of weeks at maximum. Frankly, I don't care for Elixir poly's. They are too slick. Nano's feel more natural like a regular string to me. RT;)
Members riffmeister Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 I find the polys a bit slippery, but I love their 'worn in' sound on my dread and can play them as well as I can any other type of string. I don't find the nanos to be slippery, and I have pretty good calluses on my left hand fingers. I think the nanos sound great on my OM, brighter than polys for sure, but not as bright as a brand new set of regular P/B strings (which is exactly why I like the nanos).

I've been using Martin "Bluegrass" SP4250 for almost a year now. While the other Martin's seem to go dead in a few days, the SP4250's give me about 3 or more weeks of fresh sound. PK
Members kwakatak Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 OK, I think I'm getting tired of the Elixirs again. My Larrivee sounded a bit subdued (muffled) last night while I was playing some fingerstyle tunes on it. I don't know if it's because I don't have as much fingernail on my picking hand this week (gotta clip 'em every so often or they bend and split) or the fact that I was wearing cotton but I think it's time to go back to Martin SPs for a little while. OTOH the Elixirs on my strumming guitar still sound OK so they'll be staying on my Tak, which can be a little bright.
Members STEELSTRINGS Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 I had been using polys off and on and was fairly impressed with the tone but I bought a set of nano PBs this time and I may stick with them.
Members theGOOCH Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 I have pretty intense calluses and I use Nanos. I love the sound and the longevity
Members guit30 Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 Love the slick feel of PolysJim
Members Jacktheshrubber Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 Eh i'm not a fan of Elixers. I agree with above that one day they just go dead. No warning or build up to it. One day a good sound and the next, bleh. Also I found them a little bit too bright on my Taylor so I switched and I'm happy with Martins. Maybe I'll give them another try once my Taylor warms up. Wait...do Taylors ever warm up?
