Learning to record a new guitar

PITA. Once I gain another guitar I find it does not fit the recording methods of the old guitar. Mic placement and recording levels have to be relearned.

That said, where'd the MP3 sticky go?

Yeah, I'm constantly frustrated with finding the right mic placement. One of these days I'm gonna break down and get one of those dual mic stands along with a matched pair of Oktavas.

BTW, I haven't clicked on that recording sticky in ages. It's just too long and full of old broken links. I say if you have the gumption to post a clip, just go ahead and start your own thread.

Gumption. I have lot's of gumption. One of these days I'm gonna replace it with talent.

I hear you about the mic set-up. I have a SM57 and want 2 of them. This new guitar moves a lot of air and I tried all frickin day to find the right spot. I'm thinking at a 45 degree angle away form the soundhole at the 10th fret and about 24 inches. Or, I'm going to face the wall and point the mic at it. I want it to sound good dry.

you can try putting it over your shoulder... set the mic up kinda where your ear is... its at least worth trying... your 57 will have proximity effect (as with most mics) so the further away from the source it is, the less bass it will have... getting close to the source adds some artificial bass response... i use the 45 degree angle around the 12th alot, angled toward my picking hand, and its just trial and error... too much bass move it away, too little, move it toward the fretboard or toward my picking hand...

Sounds like a plan. I'm thinking I'll try it far away and move in.
