Members Luca1369 Posted December 13, 2006 Members Posted December 13, 2006 Thanks in advance for this... I am looking for a beginner guitar for an 11 year old and I'm looking at some on Ebay, beginner kits, for about $3-4 and $30+ for shipping. It's hard buying a guitar you can't hold and play and the bridge on these things looks like it's in the wrong spot, too far "back". Anybody got any experience with these guitars, some are listed as 38", some 41". Thanks again.
Members TimothyDavid Posted December 13, 2006 Members Posted December 13, 2006 The bridge will look "too far back" if the body is not a size that is matched appropriately to size of the neck. This however is purely aesthetics. The bridge is always placed relative to the neck. You don't want to mess around with this when you're putting the kit together and changing the position of the bridge. I always feel the need to say "you get what you pay for" here. A beginner guitar can be had for at or under $100 and be multiple times better then the guitar it sounds like your looking at building as a home made kit.
Members tclune Posted December 13, 2006 Members Posted December 13, 2006 Are you also going to be getting lessons for the 11-year-old? If so, maybe you should start by locating the person you will hire to teach the child. Ask them what size and sort of guitar that is in your budget they would find appropriate for your child. You'll probably get a better fit for your child, assuming that the teacher is used to working with youngsters. FWIW
Members Luca1369 Posted December 13, 2006 Author Members Posted December 13, 2006 I am aware of the teaching part, but he needs a guitar. My specific question is if anyone has any experience with these ebay guitar beginner packs. They don't appear to be kits, I'm wondering if they're half assed decent at all, I can get one delivered for under $40. May have to visit the nearby pawn shop or guitar store I suppose. Thanks.
Members DeepEnd Posted December 13, 2006 Members Posted December 13, 2006 Personally, I wouldn't buy one. I know the guitars you're talking about and they remind me of my own first guitar, which was a piece of junk. This past summer, I bought a guitar for our daughter to learn on. I bought it used on eBay for about $60 with shipping plus another $16 for a gig bag (purchased separately, also with shipping), which is still pretty cheap for a playable guitar. You can probably find something cheaper if you try. And good luck finding something in a pawn shop if the ones in your area are anything like the ones near me.
