Members Freeman Keller Posted December 14, 2006 Members Posted December 14, 2006 We saw Rory a few years back in Spokane WA. My wife got us near front row seats in a small venue. She told a wonderful story about picking thru a mechanic's tool box to find a socket that would fit her finger. She said something like "girls, just smile at him and you can take his tools..." Watch her right hand attack too. I heard that she has finished shows with her right fingers bleeding. It is also interesting that in an old instructional video, Rory teaches RJ's Walking Blues without a slide. She said she didn't play bottleneck (at that time) and shows how to emulate the vibrato with her fingertips.
Members Queequeg Posted December 14, 2006 Author Members Posted December 14, 2006 I know it; her right hand attack is other-worldly. She has a new CD released a month or so ago of all Robert Johnson tunes called appropriately enough, THE LADY AND MR JOHNSON. Saw her earlier this year in Michigan. Great show from the 2nd row. We could have sat in the front row but I was with my girlfriend and I wanted to be sure I left with her, too. and she has the only signature CF Martin I would ever be interested in owning for myself.
Members Freeman Keller Posted December 14, 2006 Members Posted December 14, 2006 OK, two cd's I want in my stocking. I'm sure hers is better than "Eric and Mr. Johnson". She also has a new instructional video on RJ, but I havent' seen it (or bought it) yet. What a wonderful childhood - to be around people like Gary Davis and Fred McDowell as a young woman. Wow. She has a great line in one of her autobiographical songs where shes say that someone in the audience stood up and says "she plays just like a man". Oh, no - she plays better than almost any man I've ever heard.
Members nycgolfer Posted December 20, 2006 Members Posted December 20, 2006 any idea what kind of guitar she's playing in that video?
Members Freeman Keller Posted December 20, 2006 Members Posted December 20, 2006 Probably her signature Martin. You can have one too for just $5200. http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/choosing/guitars.php?p=m&m=OM-40%20Rory%20Block
Members Queequeg Posted December 20, 2006 Author Members Posted December 20, 2006 the one in the video does look like a CFM 'OM' but not her signature OM40 with the very distinctive inlay of road signs and traffic lights, RR tracks and hiway running down the fretboard. edit: In fact, you can see her Sig CFM stage left on the stand in the video. And they're out of production, so if anybody knows of one that's available, I'd sell off a good chunk of my current stable of guitars to have one like this. (the guitar, I mean. Of course!)
Members guitarist21 Posted December 20, 2006 Members Posted December 20, 2006 That. Looks. Exactly. Like. My. EPI!! They're twins! Ellen
Members Hudman Posted December 20, 2006 Members Posted December 20, 2006 Man! She must be hell on the frets and fretboard banging on it with that heavy socket to keep time. Cool stuff.
