Members caseykey118 Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Today my parents decided to put 400 dollars toward a new guitar for me. I've been playing electric guitar for around 5 years, but have been in a slump lately. I thought with the 400 i could buy a new TV for my appartment up at college, but i figured i could add another 400 of my own money into the mix and buy a nice guitar. I haven't had an acoustic before, and i love acoustic music. If you guys could recommend me some 800 dollar range guitars I would appreciate it. I've heard very good things about larrivee, but i do not know what i would want. I would probably strum and fingerpick, thanks a lot!!! and Merry Christmas everyone.
Members Rada Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Larrivee Seagull Simon & Patrick Norman
Members guitarist21 Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Epiphone Masterbilt looks great in that price range. All of the Masterbilts are awesome guitars, IMO. Well built stuff.
Members ESL94 Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Rada gives you some good choices, & I would also add Guild GAD series, in that price range. They have: One-piece mahogany neck with traditional dovetail neck joint. Other features include ebony fingerboard and bridge, ebony pearl dot-inlay bridge pins and strap buttons, classic pearl fingerboard inlays, wood bindings, bone nut and bone compensated saddle, Grover Rotomatic
Members learn'r Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 you came to a good place to find trusted advice. so much so, that I will pass, and let the seasoned pipe in. comes to mind that if your at school, you best have a locking hardshell - but that's from an ol' timer sending his last young'un off to college soon. that Guild ESL94 mentions ..... ebony and necks gotta be good, though I have yet to acquire one.
Members ESL94 Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Hey Learn'r, I have been looking @ buying the Guild GAD-JF30 (Antique Burst) for $759 (tax included). Great full, big, & deep tones. Good with finger or flat picking. The sales person told me that I will have to pick one up soon, b/4 the Jan. 07 NAMM's show - prices will go up 10%-15%.

Masterbuilts are definetly worth playin. Loud and solid. I plan on pickin it up before the new year as a matter of fact. Check em out:thu:
Members babablowfish Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 My advice would be to go to a few guitar stores and play some guitars and take notes about which ones you like. It will be easier for folks to give you advice if you already have a list of what felt, looked and sounded right to you and you just need some help narrowing down the list. There are a lot of really good guitars out there, but they have different "voices' different necks and different looks. Find what appeals to you and we'll let you know if there is something to look out for. Brands that are highly regarded are: Martin, Guild, Larrivee, Epiphone Masterbuilt, Breedlove, Taylor, Godin, Seagull, Alvarez - my apologies to those who own guitars I have forgotten to list. Not yet universally highly regarded but very good IMHO would also be Blueridge, Cort and Parkwood. Also, you never can tell when you are going to stumble upon some gem from a lesser-regarded company. Good luck!
Members martingibson70 Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Anyone mention Alvarez yet? Anyway... If you've been in a slump, save a small portion of the money for some instructional DVD's. I have not experienced a slump since I started using them.

I think Alvarez makes some great guitars, especially in the $400 and under price range. Thought about mentioning it, but then I thought that caseykey could do better for $800, IMO. Ellen
Members kwakatak Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 From my own experience (which means "in my opinion") I would suggest: Larriv
Members t60 fan Posted December 26, 2006 Members Posted December 26, 2006 Add Parkwood to kwak's list and that'd be where I'd start.
Members DeepEnd Posted December 27, 2006 Members Posted December 27, 2006 You might also try a Carvin Cobalt C980T. Rosewood jumbo with electronics/cutaway. Made by the same people (Cort) who make Parkwood.

Members OldMTDP8350 Posted December 27, 2006 Members Posted December 27, 2006 I just bought a Taylor 110 and it sounds incredible. I bought it used, I think mine was a gem, because the other one sounded just alright, and it sounded almost as good as the ones that were like 2500. I got it for 480 bucks, I am ecstatic, its an incredible guitar IMO.
